Breathing through wet fabric is sort of wierd.

The moisture collects in your mouth, and you spit it out.

the Swedes never got to "herd immunity" according to antibody testing. it needs to be at around 45% or greater to help, but has never gotten above 15% or so. good luck with that...

those antibody tests are not telling the whole story.

N95s were designed to keep certain sized particles from entering, not exiting. I have yet to see any testing on N95s in regards to filtering exhaled breaths. Also, in order for N95s to work properly, the wearer needs to be “fit tested” to ensure they are wearing the correct size. Yes, there are multiple sizes. If the wearer has facial hair, the mask won’t fit properly. If the fit isn’t correct, then air will flow around the mask instead of through it. If you have a good fit, it will be extremely difficult to breathe.
As for particle filtration, most respiratory viruses, including covid19, travel within droplets. Virus particles do not seem to be free floating without these droplets. The masks stop the droplets that contain the virus. That is why they work. Any argument that compares the size of the virus in relation to the filtration capabilities of the mask is missing the point. It is the size of the droplets that matter. There is wide speculation that the virus is also aerosolized, meaning the droplets are lighter, smaller and travel further. They also take longer for gravity to have an effect. Masks and distancing would still help with aerosols, but perhaps to a lesser degree. Lastly, masks are not 100% effective, but they don’t need to be if enough people wear them.

I think the only way to truly show them the truth about masks. Is the first wear one while taking to them and sneeze. The take the mask off. Wait until you see their mouth open and sneeze again. Of course masks are pointless and the person sneezing into the others mouth will find out by the way the anti masker does not even notice his mouth load of fresh sneeze particles.

The filtration capability is not significantly different one way versus the other. It also should not be hard to breathe through when fitted correctly. If it is, you're doing it wrong. Beards do not "make them useless". Things that reduce the seals don't even stop the masks from working, but they do reduce their effectiveness. SARS-COV-2 is not self-propelled, so reducing particle velocity and aerosolization is vital. Virtually any mask accomplishes this particular job, but some do a much better job than others.

there you have it, thats what is dangerous in terms of contracting corona, getting sneezed or coughed on. OR, the prolonged sharing of breath with a infectious corona carrier. it takes at least 20 minutes of just sharing air close together to transfer.

so sure when in prolonged contact with people sharing air, its worth everyone wearing a mask, less so outside, due to the uv light.

what is not doing any good is walking around wearing them outside, in fact i posit those people are weakening their chances. you in fact want to get exposed to the dead particles of this virus. they act like natures vaccine. if you look at places with the harshest mask and lock down rules , you see they are now facing a second surge.

we shouldn't throw caution to the wind, but there is evidence right in front of us that we might, i repeat might, be getting past this thing as a life destroying force. even the endangered people will have the option to vaccinate soon by the sound of things.

on the depressing side, France has closed down some 20 schools just 2 weeks after opening all 60 thousand schools again.

i wonder why its gone so well with us opening the schools compared to them?

man i really hope we don't have to change course here as well. so far we are still looking to allow events of over 1k people again at the next step of reopening.

maybe we have lots of positive cases at schools too, but no one is sick, so no one is tested ?
