3% ifr is like an order of magnitude worse than the flu. it's a huge amount. almost 200 THOUSAND people in one season, in one country... you might be able to brush that away, but that would be fucking stupid.
covid-19 cases... even if you don't die, there's a chance of severe (perhaps permanent) other health issues.
huge events where tons of people gather and spread it quickly can easily lead to overwhelming the health system.
higher % of ppl die when this happens.

As for New York stats, i have never searched for them. I do not live in new york. I live in New Mexico, and i have never seen nursing home stats for my state. I am guessing state nursing home statistics are not publicly available, but i may be mistaken.
