I thought I would show my water treatment / one-way aquaponic setup. I have only had it set up about 2 months and it is starting to stabilize nicely.
The key is goldfish and lots of bacterial filtration. The little can on the left is where the city water is brought in and aged at least 24 hours. The bigger can on the right is where the magic happens. There are about 20-30 goldfish living in it with the two different types of filters. The little filter on top is super oxygenated with 2 large air pumps. There is also a healthy amount of ceramic filter media. The bigger filter on the bottom has a layer of activated charcoal, one of lava rock, and then the foam filter on top.
The plants you see is just a sample of what can be done with virtually no nutrients except a couple of weak doses of FF Big Bloom. When one of the fish die, I poke a hole and bury it in some lucky plant.
I think quality water is one of the top three requirements for successful grows. The old timers have been using similar methods for thousands of years with great results.
