Was this a computer hustle?

I have never had anything like this happen before and I'm not the most tech saavy person in the world.About an hour ago I was getting some info on lunesta and all the sudden these boxes came on my screen and the audio blared My computer was compromised and hackers were trying to steal my information. It gave a Microsoft number to call and I couldn't do anything with the computer so I called it.An Indian dude named Ganesh answered Microsot and I told him what was happening. To make a long story short we went through a lot of stuff that I probably should not have done but it seemed pretty legit. He took over my computer and helped me kill the annoying audio.Back in January I had a screen pop up that said my mcaffee protection had expired. He said this was the problem and tried to sell me 3 years protection for 440 dollars.I toled him he was nuts and he said they have partners and could make it cheaper at 320 bucks. At this point I told him I wouldn't give my credit card number if he had me by the balls with a pair of plyers. This is when he told me that I would pay by check and that's when I said adios amigo.I could not get the fucker off my smartphole and had to turn it off.It took my five minutes to clear my screen but now everything seems OK.It it true I didn't do anything when the mcaffe screen popped up and now I have a mcaffee icon on my computer.I wont click on it.It was a hustle right?---

Sounds like you just gave him access to get and steal certain information.. He might have even added another type of Malware/Spyware..

When something like that happens, first thing i do turn comp off and back on and while its loading ill start it up in Safe mode.. If i know what it is ill block it. If I dont have A program that can, ill go and download something that can..

not exactly sure what you saw
typically it's a popup web window that shows, and it is a hustle
basically just a web page that tries to get you to contact someone and then shakes you down for money
you did the right thing hanging up, but they likely did get your phone number so expect more contacts in the future

Sound pretty weird for sure, but also false-virus scans are pretty common petty viruses/spyware. My mom managed to download one of those on her computer a while a go.

Norton of F-Secure Internet Security sofwares cost around 50 - 60 euros/year in Europe and i really recommend getting a proper internet sec-software.

Few tips on how to keep your computer clean:

- Don't click Ok/yes to anything you don't fully understand/don't want, usually these are pop-ups, rather click the red-X.

- Get free versions of CCleaner and Malwarebytes to keep your computer clean of maleware etc.

- Try to uninstall the false-Mcaffee program thru the normal way you normally uninstall software from Windows/OS. If it doesn't seem to wanna uninstall you can use CCleaner for this (on CCleaner click 'tools' to uninstall programs)

- If all else fails you can always re-install the Operating System (windows, linux), which will remove all data and viruses from your computer. make back-ups on your files before reinstalling the OS.
..and then buy the F-secure or Norton internet sec-software

:)

I've had this happen to me a few times but I didn't call the number provided by the scam web page. It's NOT a MS phone number... confirmed by MS when I called them directly. Most of the time I was able to press and hold the 'escape' button until it stopped, then clear my cache. Other times I stopped it by holding down the 'back' button (left arrow) then clear the cache. Ctrl/Alt/Del might work but not always. One time... nothing worked. That's when I called MS direct (NOT the number on the scam web page).

But here's the funny thing. MS transferred me to a foreign number (probably India) that did precisely same thing as what you experienced. It was a scam SANCTIONED by MS!!!

The technician was such a jerk that he locked up my computer and kept closing the Notepad page I was trying to save our conversation to (he was trying to avoid me having any proof as to what he was doing). I prevented him from finally succeeding by shaking the mouse around and being quick at saving the text. He undid everything he did then restarted my PC in Safe Mode to make it appear as if it was completely messed up. At first I didn't realize what he'd done and asked what happened. He said he didn't know and I should have paid for the protection service. What a jackass!! I told him to GTF out of my PC.

I called MS to report their SANCTIONED technician and politely explained what happened. Guess what... MS hung up on me after 30 seconds.

So... MS is as big a douche as these bastard scammers. I wouldn't be surprised if MS is behind the scams themselves... because the modus operandi is precisely the same.

What solved the problem is a program called SuperAntiSpyware.

What surprised me was that my suite of Windows Defender, MalwareBytes, and McAfee AV couldn't prevent or solve the problem. After that, I uninstalled McAfee and purchased BitDefender... and SuperAntiSpyware.

After a few days, my PC started running sluggish as hell. Something is definitely wrong but nothing I have installed can find the problem. It's time to find yet another antimalware application. This is really frustrating.

Oh... and I had this issue because I sometimes visit porn websites. Unlike some folks, I tell the truth!! :D

ctrl alt delete = When your computer freezes or something like that, so you can shut it down or re-start it..

Just try to uninstall the false-software as i told you, if it's there. It is/was prolly just a spyware/virus, you didn't get hacked, me thinks.

Well since he was on your computer so long you probably need to wipe it if he was just downloading shit and installing it. Easiest thing to do is just start from scratch

If he was stealing your information you need to call your bank and change passwords/emails on accounts. Might have done both

As for your phone, just upload your contacts and stuff you want to keep on the cloud, then wipe it. It's not clear if he was installing apps there or just messing with your browser.

In the future if this happens just clear history/cache and it will go away on your cellphone...Same thing with your browser on your computer if you get stuck in some loop

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/

Or if u use chrome get that version

edit - and you can always hold down the power button if you realize you've made a terrible mistake

These programs aren't proper Internet Security-softwares, not even anti-virus, exept the McAfee. Internet Security is much better than just an anti-virus. You get to do secure bank/shopping with Internet Security, but not with an anti-virus program.

Get a Norton or F-secure (Internet Security) = much less grey hairs, i promise you.
Norton used to be "heavier" and harder to fully uninstall/clean off your computer when you want it out of there , but i haven't used Norton for years.

not related to OP's bad day, but worth mentioning in the scam department
there's a telemarketing type of operation
they will call and the initial message will be 'can you hear me?'
if you say yes it will be recorded and be used as validation for charges that will appear on your phone bill
not sure how long this will be around, hopefully short, but be aware!

I doubt it. I have never seen a web-page giving me a Microsoft number and i have spent many hours on www the last 10 years (..not porn. Well, little when i was younger)

Fake McAffee-scanner is pretty common, but there are other fake virus-scans also. Think it was fake-McAffee installer my mom had on her computer last summer. It slowed her computer down quite abit.

Don't click 'ok' to any pop-up virus scans to start scanning.

Avast is another free anti-virus people use
..but i don't trust free anti-virus programs to be good enough, but it all depends on where you do your www-surfing.
I watch abit of streamed sports and some of those sites come with viruses, but the free-ones could work for people who just read news and visit facebook etc. basic stuff.

Ccleaner is a nice program for cleaning a computer's cookies file, prefetch files, pagehistory etc. with one run. It's free.
As i mentioned earlier, you can even uninstall programs with it. I once had some shady program installed, which Windows didn't manage to remove, but CCleaner did.
..you can manage start-up programs with it and what else. Higly recomended.

and so, being as it was mentioned in the title, and it did bring back the of scariest of memories from the '70s I'll drop a doodie bomb (yup, a #2) in the way of musical torture. The Hustle:

[YOUTUBEIF]Y0xVLGssnwU[/YOUTUBEIF]

if you were a dyed in the wool stoner/rocker back in the '70s you were certainly subjected to bad music, DISCO music. this was the most vile & evil tune of its day.

I suggest NOT listening to this tune, but! just like a bad kid who's been warned not to touch that hot iron, I know you won't be able to help but to give it a listen.
