Is it possible that some of you who are having smell pass through a relatively fresh carbon filter are running air through them too quickly?

Most have a cfm rate, but the given rates are typically for re-circulating through the filter.

Passing air straight through cuts the rating in half, at least per can's detailed ratings. Other companies just give one rating, and its always similar to can's re-circulating rate with a similar amount of carbon. I really feel this is leading people to run air too fast and not ensure proper contact time.

These fan/filter combos they sell are universally too fast for the filters they come with as well, further reinforcing the false idea that these filters can run anywhere near the given cfm rating.

A 4'' fan pulling close to 200cfm needs a can33 to ensure proper contact time for example, yet the can33 is always sold in combination with a 6'' fan.

Having run some of the strains mentioned in this thread, I know, they drop the bomb. But, with proper contact time on the carbon, and a leak-free duct run on the light and filter, I've been able to keep any smell from coming through by slowing down the fan on the filter a bit at those times when things are crazy, like approaching harvest or whatever.

Thought I'd throw that all out there for discussion given that I've seen a few people mention smell getting through and its definitely a situation that needs to be avoided.

so if i have a 4" fan pulling ~190cfm, you think a can33 will be enough to grow one of these stinky strains?

Whats a safer bet for a 4" fan?

I'm talking about, not being able to smell anything upstairs, downstairs, in fact, not even smell anything in the room unless I open the tent.

thanks

I'm surprised, Bubba Chunk didn't smell at all in veg. I have a GH Bubba Kush that is looking really nice in veg, I know that people say that GH isn't going to have a good Bubba Kush but it's just Bubble gum and Hindu Kush. It has very fat leaves and a short stocky growth like Bubba Chunk.

Now Govt Mule reaked of bubble gum fruits, over powered ever other smell in the room. It's very rare for a plant to not smell in veg, I think I recall durban poison not having a strong odor.

I'd rather make my own filter out of a rigid duct tube, that is the same diameter as my fan. These are nice and long, plus they are a straight shot so all of the carbon is utilized. CFM doesn't matter as much as being scrubbed, there are other ways to lower temperatures.

A rigid duct tube, some plastic mesh that is nice and tight with small openings so carbon doesn't fall out, a couple of those rings that tighten around the flexible duct tube to secure the rigid duct and it's set. It's way cheaper and it works great, I'll have to show some pictures some time.

Yeah I guess I just figured they all stank..... didn't think about super duper run for cover reeeeek :D :D

Yeah I say they don't smell because in the room they don't. They carbong filter takes it away. I took 2 bubble gum and a golden skunk outside and killed em and the entire area stank to high hell..... I'm in the back spraying potpouri spray so the neighbors don't smell it. All executions happen inside from now on :D

So I'm sure the bubba stinks.... I just can't smell it.

I have to disagree with Shishkaberry being on the stink list. It's low odor if it isn't bumped or brushed. Just like a lot of Northern Lights.
