They used to sell those colonial era clay pipes at some of the historical sites in Virginia because they're one of the most commonly found items left over from that time. I got one in the 1980s and smoked dope in it, just like George Washington did back in his days. A friend of mine had a Dan Quayle's head ceramic bong that we also smoked out of, it was more functional but a lot less historic feeling.

Monreale Cathedral in Sicily

Sicily's Cannabis Cathedral

In 1072 the 'Christians' took control of the island of Sicily from the Arabs who had long held the land. By 1174 the new King of Sicily William II decided to build a grand metropolitan cathedral in the newly conquered land in the picturesque little village of Monreale.

The Monreale Cathedral is unique in that there are three styles depicted in both the architecture and art of the structure. A mix of Norman-French, Byzantine and Arab styles all create a stunning display of spectacular design.

With a swirling mix of cultures one image can be found throughout... Cannabis!

Inside the Monreale Cathedral in Sicily

Gigantic glass mosaics with gold backgrounds dominate the eye throughout the interior of the majestic cathedral. Scenes starting from the book of Genesis all the way up until the new testament are depicted in agonizing detail.

Every inch of wall, arch and ceiling space was used to create brilliant detail to engulf the viewer in the cathedral's narrative.

Taking a closer look at the individual mosaics, a common symbol is repeated throughout the narrative... The cannabis leaf!

Moreover the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: Take thou also unto thee the chief spices, of flowing myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much even two hundred and fifty, and of sweet kaneh bosm two hundred and fifty, and of cassia five hundred, after the shekel of the sanctuary and of olive oil a hin.
And thou shalt make it a holy anointing oil, a perfume compounded after the art of the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil.

I know what your thinking... It's just palm tree's stupid!

Well maybe... That is unless the image of palm tree's were also depicted in the mosaics showing the difference between the two, which there just so happens to be!

The image of palm tree's are depicted in multiple mosaics around the Monreale Cathedral, none resembling the representations of the cannabis leaf's...

One mosaic in particular even shows the palm tree and cannabis leaf on top of each other for a quick visual comparison of the two designs.

Cannabis would hold its rightful place in Christianity until Pope Innocent VIII tried to completely erase cannabis from the church's record in the 15th century... Not so Innocent after all...

The Cathedral of Monreale stands to reminds us like the footprints in the sand parable, cannabis has been here the whole time!

Where did marijuana come from in the 1930's? Mexican genetics from the immigrants?

Interesting question, with many possibilities... In the southwest going back to at least the early 1800's, native American's grew drug type cannabis. Stories of this can be found (i've posted a few) in all the southwest and Mexican papers late 1800's early 1900's.

You also had drug type cannabis being grown in California by the 'hindu's', 'asians' and 'mexicans' starting at least 1850's ish...

Down south you had cases of 'share croppers' that grew drug type cannabis mostly staying within racial circles...

New York and east coast going all the way down to Carolina had been growing drug type cannabis ever since the East India Trading company was bringing it over from India and Africa. So much so that when the American companies like Parke Davis started to compete with them they renamed their weed 'Cannabis Americana' using seeds from India lol

Genetics from India, Africa, China and Mexico (southwest U.S. to South America) would all be high on my list of culprits:biggrin:

"he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;"

Hemp Santa

In 1881 political artist Thomas Nast would forever define the modern image of the big man... Santa Claus!

Working largely from Clement Clarke Moore's poem in 1823 "A Visit from St. Nicholas" aka "Twas the Night Before Christmas", Nast would portray a large jolly pipe smoking Santa we all know and love.

While some will question, 'whats in Santa's pipe?', a look at Nast's earlier drawing of Santa in 1863 leaves no doubt, Santa is indeed Pro Hemp!

The January 3, 1863 issue of 'Harpers Weekly' features Nast's first depiction of modern day Santa. In a illustration titled "A Christmas Furlough" or 'Santa Claus in camp', a jolly Santa is shown visiting Union soldiers during the civil war.

Of course Santa Claus brings gifts and cheer to all the soldiers but a closer look reveals his use of Hemp.

In the illustration Nast draws Santa holding a special present for the gathered soldiers, a Jefferson Davis doll. Santa knows his audience and presents the doll to the crowd hanging by a Hemp noose!

But how to toast Santa's use of Hemp?...

With a puff of course!

I guess I was thinking of when there was a crack down on Marijuana in the early 1900's to control Mexican Immigration.

This article says the Spanish brought it here in the 1500's but it sounds like it was hemp.

They are talking about King Charles V's 'LAW OF INDIES XX' in 1545. (in this thread on post 226 here https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?p=7448162&highlight=1545#post7448162)

"Law XX. Let Viceroys, and Governors see to the planting of, and benefitting from flax and hemp.
We [Emperor Charles V, of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire] entrust Viceroys, and Governors, to see to it that flax and hemp be sown and benefitted in the Indies, and to procure that the Indians apply themselves to this grangery, and that they understand in spinning and weaving flax." - 'LAW OF INDIES XX' 1545

The Spanish then started farming hemp in Chile under this verdict (which they say has been farmed ever since with the same seed) in the first officially 'documented' European grown hemp in the America's.

I believe it was in the America's much earlier, but I digress.

My answer was for who was growing the drug type cannabis in America in the 1930's and a guess to the genetics used, just tried to showed a pattern leading up to it.

Love how history likes to forget about groups like the Bohemians that were using hashish well before the dreaded 'Mexican influence' of marijuana use:biggrin:
