I was going to recommend Chickhawk but I see it's already been mentioned. An excellent and not-too-Hollywood film is 84 Charlie Mopic.

Im looking for a good book on the Vietnam war. I have the 'Dispatches'
book by Herr. Any recommendations? Any Vietnam veterans on here with their own stories, take on the war and how they feel about it now? (I know there was the guy who wrote the 'Log Cabin In the Wilderness' thread which was awesome).....

Michael Herr's "Dispatches" was a good read as was Tim O'Briens "The Things they Carried"

"Fields of Fire" by James Webb and "Meditations in Green" by Stephen Wright" are novels by authors who served in Vietnam

There are some exceptional books that I think everyone should read:

1) Slow Burn, by Orrin Deforest

By a CIA station chief. Apparently the best intelligence doesn't come from torture. Who would have thought it. (Torture is usually only used as either punishment or to get confessions, not information.)

2) The Special Forces At War, by Shelby L. Stanton

Great overview of all the Special Forces projects (Delta, Leaping Lena, etc.). It also shows the transfer of the Special Forces from CIA control to US Army control under General Creighton Abrams.

3) A Vietcong Memoir, by Truong Nhu Tang

This book gives an overview of the 'above ground' side of the National Liberation Front (NLF) or Vietcong.

The Tunnels Of Cu Chi - A harrowing account of America's Tunnel Rats in the Underground Battlefields of Vietnam, by Tom Mangold

Unique account of a very special way of warfare - underground tunnels.

I agree with subrob, the 13th valley is excellent fiction on Vietnam - maybe the best. For non-fiction I'd recommend A Bright Shining Lie by Neil Sheehan or The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien.

Seconded for Neil Sheehan.

Lots of insight into the political and military mindset behind the scenes as well as the historical aspects. A scholarly work written with a journalist's skill and a novelist's sense of drama.

Highly readable.

If you like that, you may want to check out:

War Is A Racket, by Maj. Gen. Smedley Darlington Butler. On Prescott Bush, Brown Brothers Harriman, and the attempted coup against FDR. He was fighting for the same Rockefeller corporations then too.

Think of it as a prelude to:

Family Of Secrets, by Russ Baker. On the Bush family and their longstanding ties to the CIA, Yale, etc.

Republicans only get into power through coups. Nixon negotiating with the South Vietnamese behind President Johnson's back (treason, as LBJ called it). Reagan negotiating with Iran to hold on to the hostages until after he won the elections. GW Bush being appointed President by a corporatist Republican Supreme Court.

They simply can't get most voters to vote for what they are selling.

Where they lay, Earl Swift... About the search for remains of US servicemen in Vietnam still to this day, focuses on the site of a helicopter shot down in battle. Tells the story of the crew and how they lost their lives in one of the biggest helicopter battles in history. I highly recommend this book!
