veg cab with florecents..

going to tackel a little weekend project..I'm going to make a veg cab with florecents. nothin special just a quickie..i have two electronic 4' balasts and i have 4 40w T8 cool white bulbs..going to exaust the small room and also give it alot of air movement with fans. the temp at my house stays 75, 78 year round so heat is not a problem. my question is the lights....do i need to get the highest output floros? how high do they go as far as wats?. and how long can i leave the plants in the box before i put em in the hps? will i be able to leave them in untill they can be sexed?...also here is my big question..my mentor told me to use high output aquarium floros that grow plant life..have'nt seen anyone use these in their grows....can anyone give me some advice on my questions? i asked growdoc in one of his threads but i did'nt want to crowed his post.....a new thread will get me more info..thanks guys...

for veg, I use 3 reg. cheapo shoplights from walmart with 40 watt w/4 cool white bulbs and 2 warm white bulbs.(I even use the cheapest bulbs available) I leave my plants in the cab untill they fill it, then to the flower room I used to flower with flo's ( 4 warm white and 2 plant)but that was befor i bought my HPS.

With the high output aquarium floros,you would need a vho ballast (if thats the same type of lighting that Growdoc was refering too) but really, by the time you buy a couple of high output aquaium light bulbs and the vho ballast , you could have bought a HPS. heres a link to an aquarium lighting store.

so if i got two cool white and two warm white i should be ok ??? for about 10 starts?..those ballast are too much$ hell i already have a 400w hps but i dont want to deal with more electricity than i already have..thats why i want to go with floros..what does the warm white mixed with the cool white do?

Cools are more blue (veg) Warms are more red (flower). A combination gives a fuller spectrum. Like MH vs HPS. So yeah that should work. I have the cheap ass grow fluros (purplish) red + blue in my seed chamber. I think mixin'um up with the cool and warm is better, more lumens. Actually that is how my kitchen bulbs are as well. I must of tried all the different fluros, but even I like the mix of cool and warm. When you mix'um, colors look fairly normal under them, which equals a more balanced spectrum with blue and red peaks.

I recomend using some cheap compact fluorescents bulbs to suppliment your lighting, they fit into incandescent fixtures and no ballasts needed. You can find them at hardwarestores, walmarts etc... I have 3 23W in my veg cab and they work great. They would go great with some warm spectrum fluorescents!
