If you are soil growing, the deeper the better. Cannabis loves to dig its roots down deep. The deeper the container the deeper young roots penetrate encouraging good health. Young plants will definitely be more vigorous & grow faster if the root zone is large from the beginning of the plants life cycle. Unimpeded area for new feeder roots to shoot down in search of food & water will create a great start for your new seedlings to establish themselves as strong vibrant plants. Remember, cannabis is a weed. It will grow in some of the worst conditions, however most growers strive to grow the best cannabis they can without inhibiting growth as to speed crop production. I mean, when growing a plant dubbed dangerous & illegal by the tyrants, you wanna make it worth your while. & Welcome to IcMag!
I just read an article about wide planters in High Times, and in short, yes. Wide is good if you want to keep your plant from getting too tall.
When I was a kid I was told that a plant can only grow as far wide as the root system is. This is kinda/sorta true. A wider root system is better at supporting a wider, shorter, bushier plant.
