Actually the original poster who was dismissed quite readily was 100% correct!

Phenols (flavors) can pass to the fruit easily. In grapes, those guys that farm with manure have terrible mis-flavors in their fruit from the taste of cow shit. I have seen and tasted (yuk) this way too many times.

The hypothesis is a good one.
