using a heat lamp

right now i have a 600w light and a occilating(sp?) fan on the same line with a space heater to keep my room around 72. Its cold in the north east. i want to put another 600 watt on the line. Before when i did this, the heater kept popping the breakers. The line is 15 amps max. The 2 lights along with the fan are ok, but no heater in both. I would run the heater at night time of the plants but it has a built in thermometer and wont start up if i use a timer.

So, can i buy a heat lamp and use that to suppliment for heat?

If you use a heat lamp it can't be one that produces any visible light. That eliminates about all of them except the ceramic heat lamp bulbs. Check out reptile supplies or farm animal supplies.

If your plants are in a tray, placing a heat mat under the tray works really good. This will directly warm the tray and container/roots. The warm air rising from the warm tray filters up through your plants.

Check out the Lasko MyHeat 200 watt Electric Portable Personal Heater. Placing one of these under a small table will warm the air directly and also heat the table giving the effect of a heat mat. No thermostat on this little guy.

These emit infrared light which really doesn't heat the air directly. The long wave radiation passes through air and heats whatever surface it happens to strike. So I think a heat lamp would be better aimed down at your plants like a light.

Now if you aim a fan at it then the air molecules hitting the bulb will be heated, but these things aren't very cheap and they do burn out. To heat air directly it would probably be best to use a heater designed for that purpose.

:biggrin: hi, at the moment i'm using a couple of work lamps with 60 watt globes for extra heat instead of ceramic heater, but thats with lights on at moment, works perfect even try dif wattage globes, good in clone and mum cupbourd, my ceramic heater is split=750/1500 watt.:ying:

What else is plugged into the circuit? Chances are, if adding a heater is kicking the breaker, there are too many appliances trying to draw power from that one circuit. Maybe a different circuit or fewer appliances?

hth!

i read my heater, it draws 10.6 amps of power, that with 3 600w digital ballasts, that alone is 20.6 amps and my circuit is for 15.

Heat lamp won't help. The 600's draw 5 amps each running, more when they first turn on. The heater needs to be on its own circuit and those heat lamps (notice that's what cops call HID lamps?) are just a waste of electrons. If you only have the heater on when the lights are off, you might be ok.

thanks ,thats what i thought, i use ceramic mainly, but that shows a slight red line of glow, which i have hidden, plants not so fussy outside lol, lil fukers.

It is red light at a wavelength of 660 nanometers that affects the plant's flowering hormones. If you don't want nanners then I think you'd want to avoid that red glow.

thats for letting me know about that glow, the heater in there is a ceramic heater, now im gunna have to figure something else. and at this time it will be a bit difficult to get the heater on its own line atm

i worked out at plant level, if the plants could see any glow i made a small metal box with front cover that comes down far enough to cover that vthin glow, been in there long time ,no nanners, plenty dipsticks.lol. plenty peeps run them heaters no prob.

My apologies! For whatever reason I took it into my head that it was about 12amps draw total. Glad you set me straight! :tiphat:
