Uruguay to sell legal marijuana for $1 a gram

Well, a friend from Uruguay that just spent one month there told me it will definitely be high grade cannabis grown in Uruguay. as opposed the low quality shit Paraguayan brick you speak of.

the whole idea of the reform is to end the black-market around Cannabis, so not only does it mean it has to become legal, but also as cheap as possible and of very high quality, leaving no territory for black-market business.

Uruguay has about 2 million inhabitants, not a lot, and growing enough for about 10% of that population will be easy, all grown in greenhouses most likely, seedless, medical grade, 1 dollar a gram.

the State is not looking to make a profit off it either. so it'll be minimally taxed.

Alcohol on the other hand, is highly taxed and consumption in public areas highly restricted, as well as sales.

anyway, we'll see how this plays out in mid 2014...

peace

edit: btw, only people with Uruguayan citizenship will be able to access sales points.

You are correct, Bombadil! The thing is, you do not have to be a "citizen" to partake. You come, apply for residency, and once you are 'en tramite,' you are basically a legal resident... ;p

I was WRONG on my earlier post. Jeez, things are changing so fast here & NOTHING on the net is up to date re immigration, processes, etc. About 6 years out of date.

You can grow 6 plants for each member of the household over age 18... Which means, being a "pajarita" I am going to have to work twice as hard this season... :D

Median incomes average - check CIA fact book... Where I live there is not a lot of work & people have to scratch for a living. Artists, firewood cutters/vendors, cleaning rental cabanas, etc. Many people live on an average of 10,000 pesos/month for a family. That is $500USD, or a bit less (atm) depending on exchange rates.

IF you have a talent or skill & can run your business over the internet, c'mon down... You have to prove your income, but an attorney's letter is sufficient. Anyone wanting to come, feel free to contact me. I know escribanas, attorneys, and translators & a lovely local girl here speaks perfect English.

Buying property is becoming a better bargain, since Arg outlawed the American Dollar, basically. :D

UY is up to 3 million people now.

I am working with a group of confederates to improve not only TOP QUALITY kind bud, but also produce medicinals, esp. high CBD strains...

My 69 yr old friend, another full-blood NDN, was shocked as hell when I mentioned that my massage blend was green because it was an extraction from stems & trim off of good weed... She has nervous diabetes, so now to get her to eating & cooking with it. (She sneaks a cig with me, cuz her kids don't like her smoking...) ;p

Glad to see the interest. Do be aware ya gotta have some sand in yer gizzard to make it here. 95% of Americans I have met & hosted & showed around just can't do without a dishwasher.

My girlfriend in Ohio just sent me a countertop washing machine that does 2 kilos at a time. :woohoo:

Cost of living is about the same as the USSA, but once you buy a lot (about $17k in our area, altho we paid $9k in 2011) & get your house built, you can live good on about $600/mo for a couple.

@Bombadil - Alcohol here is no dramas. Tourist town, right? Pampered EU & American savages. Drunk, walking around the streets drunk, pissing in the street... (Better shut up - don't wanna get the Ozzies excited here. :p) We were down in town last year one night during the madness just after New Year's... A drunk walking ran into our parked car!

No dramas up here, dear, unless you figure on drunk driving. Not recommended, but then, almost nobody to see you, and no need for seatbelts, except in high season.

Yep, UYos like their grog about as much as the Aussies do, methinx. I'll have a bit of the grappa miel to warm my blood on chilly days, or a glass of good tannat in the evening, but booze is not my thing... and NEVER in summer like these young college idiots. Passing out on the beach & burning to a crisp...

No wonder I avoid town 2 months of the year, eh?

@Bobblehead - You are doing it right, fighting the good fight, my friend. Power to you! We're trying to start similar here in UY, but lack labs & tech. Ya got any primitive tribal recipes?

All you have to do is take a swim across Rio de la Plata and you're in Argentina, where high quality buds sell for U$S10-30 a g, and possession of small quantities by anyone is decriminalized. Undermine the black market? Sure...

I'm all for cannabis reform... I'm just curious to see how it plays out... Where will the overrages be diverted to? I provide my patient with free meds, and grow as many overrages as I can manage for the dispensary and others. The only thing I'm undermining is mexican cartels.

I've only seen the shittiest weed imaginable in Chile, Argentina, and never tried to find any in UR. Much lower quality than found in Mexico.

I can't see a $1 retail point for AAA cannabis. Who is going to be willing to produce it at $.50 so it can retail for $1. Hand trimming AAA requires about $10 labor for 28.35grms.

Not exactly a primitive tribal recipe... And one of the kits costs a small fortune in UY, but its probably the closest you'll get without spending the hundreds of thousands on a mass spectrometer or gas chromatograph or w/e it is they're using in the labs nowadays... I can't speak for the accuracy of the DIY lab test, never done it with that specific kit... But I've done something similar in chemistry lab and it should give the results you need.

South America is really an untapped market for medical cannabis. Full reform is coming faster there than anywhere else. The trouble lies in the amount of disposable income the people have. Most people are just trying to get by. I actually found that many, pues los argentinos por lo menos, believed strongly that the plant shouldn't be sold for profit at all. They were all about personal consumption. I think that's an easier mentality to keep when the $$$ just isn't there like it is in the US. Every time I go back though, Argentina is more like the US.

The thing I miss most is sitting at the table, playing cards, and actually talking to people. Enjoying each other's company... Without the texts, twitter, facebook, mobile apps... Shit, its probably already started. I've been gone a few years now.

I always left my asados a little pink... Lol me dicen que cuando vuelvo, vamos a comer asados crudos. Jaja...

Hola Bobble,

no, tampoco soy Argentino, soy Venezolano :yoinks:

paz y salud!

I really haven't been down south enough to be able to say anything about alcohol control... 4 days in MVD and then 2 days the following year... Meh... We carried ours back to the hotel tho. Here in PDD, we can drink wherever we want, except in the car. Even at the bus stop, no dramas.

I do NOT like all the drunken tourists that come thru, condoms all over the beach & a broken glass, traffic, etc. People drive like maniacs & bury their pickup trucks or smash into each other. Big one last year - 2 am, 3 cars.

I'm the type to hide out in the forest where peeps be askeerdt of cruceras... Have cats that are great mousers; hence, fewer snakes. The only one we've had close to the house (that we know of) was a big black snake & they eat cruceras. They're all over in town now, just coming out of hibernation... Dan got one in his front yard about 2 ft long & I showed him how to skin it out & pin down & salt it... (he salted the wrong side)... Had him flip it and resalt & am looking for the linseed oil to work into it... ;p They were kinda shocked how fast an old woman could skin a snake. I took my time with bandage scissors on the belly so the skin would be nice & even.

Re the steak - the best of it they say goes for export to Britain. ATM, here in PDD I got 2 nice prime rib steaks yesterday about 3/4" with all the fat & paid 66 pesos ($3.30). Had one last night 'bien jugoso" and another today, with fried egg on top, mushroom & onions on the side. Yum.

In high season, prices here go up like mad. The price of the above steaks will hit probably $5.50 or more and won't go back down until March. Even chorizo is 160/kg in summer and 90/kg in winter. Don't know how the locals survive, but I do see the occasional lamb tethered outside the houses now & then... Poor bastards, their days are numbered.

Is this a consideration?

Monsanto Marijuana Initiative Grows in Uruguay?
soros and Monsanto
Uruguay becomes first nation to legalise marijuana trade ... The Uruguayan government hopes legalising the sale of marijuana will tackle drug cartels ... Uruguay's cannabis bill reflects liberal past ... Uruguay has become the first country in the world to make it legal to grow, sell and consume marijuana. After nearly 12 hours of debate, senators gave the government-sponsored bill their historic final approval. The law allowing registered Uruguayans over 18 to buy up to 40g (1,4oz) of the drug a month is not expected to come into force before April. The government hopes it will help tackle drug cartels, but critics say it will expose more people to drugs. – BBC
Dominant Social Theme: This is great. Uruguay strikes a blow against prohibition.
Free-Market Analysis: Are considerations regarding Monsanto's business progress in South America behind the legalization of marijuana in Uruguay?
George Soros was a significant supporter of marijuana legalization in Uruguay, and Soros is reportedly also a big Monsanto shareholder. Here, from a recent Guardian article, published just before the bill passed:
Rich countries debating legalisation of cannabis are also watching the bill, which philanthropist George Soros has supported as an "experiment" that could provide an alternative to the failed US-led policies of the long "war on drugs".
