Hello All
I'm going to attempt growing some sativa dominate (or, in the case of Durban Poison, pure sativa) strains outdoors this year at 45 degrees North latitude in far Upstate NY, just below the Quebec border.

I've been growing indica dominates or hybrids for 30+ years both indoors and out, with a pretty good amount of success, but have only ever dabbled with sativas, mainly due to $$$ during prohibition. Who wants to waste a planting spot on a strain that might not mature, when you can go with the "tried and true" and pull thousands of $$$ out of the same spot?

That being said, with legalization, I have nothing to lose monetarily, so I'm going to try run some sativas outdoors that I'm hopeful will mature here before the bad fall weather sets in. I can usually keep plants in the ground until Nov. 1st most years if needed, but anything past that most likely won't fully mature.

I've had success years ago with KC Brains "Leda Uno" strain (60% sativa), and loved the taste and especially the effects of the end product. Leda finished here in mid-to-late October. I made a bunch of crosses with it to some local strains and some early seed bank purchases & grew them for years until every bean I popped of those crosses would go hermie on me. I abandoned the line and have grown nothing but indicas or hybrids since.

Now I'm ready to dive back into the sativa world with this years outdoor crop, and have the following strains to choose from:

Lemon Shining Silver Haze (Royal Queen Seeds) 75% sativa Mid-Oct. harvest
Strawberry Cough (Royal Queen Seeds) 75% sativa Early Oct. harvest
Chocolate Haze (Royal Queen Seeds) 95% sativa Late Oct. harvest
Green Crack (Hypno Seeds) 65% sativa end of Sept. harvest
Pineapple Express (Hypno Seeds) 60% sativa end of sept. harvest
Jack Herer (Hypno Seeds) 55% sativa end of Sept. harvest
Durban Poison (Hypno Seeds) 100% sativa end of Sept. harvest
Trop Cherry (Hypno Seeds) 60% sativa end of sept./beginning of Oct. harvest

I'm going to try to narrow the above selections down to 6 strains to keep it legal, lol.

If anyone has any experience and/or advice on any of these strains, especially in Northern latitudes, I'd love to hear it!

Hello fellow Upstater!

With the increasingly deeper Falls we are having the opportunity to finish NLD plants. These sativa hybrids have a way of finishing or coming close. A little plastic covering during Fall rains does wonders. My big mostly sativa plant last season almost finished and had very little mold. Even after the week of cold and rain in last September. Best of luck on your outdoor season!

Hiya Lester
That's a nice-looking bud, really solid-looking. Great job!
If my sativas this year get as dense as that, I will be very happy!
How was the buzz from this lady?

The were quite dense. It is a cross of Mind Blower x Sour Bubble so wasn't a pure NLD by any means but definitely leaned towards the sat side.

The effect is old school and very enjoyable. A little too much for some of the once a day smokers and most definitely does not mix well with alcohol lol.

It was a volunteer plant that grew on the site where I made seeds the year before. It went unnoticed until it was 7' tall. Turned out female and went on to supply enough for the Winter for wifey and I. Very incensey old school aromas and potent sat leaning effects.

This is from eye level

That is so cool that the monster in the pics is a volunteer plant! I love vols, lol.
I've tried to leave a few seeds in every hole/mound that I harvest from each year, hoping for volunteers in the spring. It never really worked for me, but I know an old hippie head who swore by that method. And he grew some serious poundage back in the day, lol.
I have found a few volunteers over the years, though. I guess a vol is a vol, and you can't "draft" them, lol.
Whatcha plan on growing for strains this year?

I can have 3 legal which I will do one of each GG4, Mac 1 and Blue Dream. I know they do good here and produce a lot without issues and those were my wife's choices.

In another spot and my friends place will be Flo, C99 and a C99 Haze.

And finally another friends place will be 3 phenos of my cross
(Wedding Cake x Oaxacan) X Blueberry plus a few (Wedding Cake x Oaxacan) x Slurriking.

Hiya Brother!

Pulling a chair and riding with ya! It is going to be really exciting!
I grew Green Crack and Jack H. and both in my opinion are must ladies to have, i can tell you that if you got the right pheno they will not disappoint🤣

Hell yeah

I'm over in Rochester, 43-44⁰N
Doing a bumper seed crop ATM, then gonna pop some seeds for guerilla outdoor around here.

Durban Poison was great in Hudson. Though it's about 40% sativa. Durban x Skunk
Skunk is great for making other genetics flower quicker.

I have some long flowering stuff I'm going to put out in patches to try and try to a climate to the region.
Mullum x Malawi
Congo IX
Malawi Gold
They won't really finish, but their seeds should be a lil quicker next year, and I'll just keep selecting for ones that can finish here.

Godspeed

Hiya Lester
Never thought of running Blue Dream outdoors here. I grew a bunch of it inside around 2014ish, and it was really good smoke and popular. Might have to get some beans for next year.

C99 and Flo. Mmm. Brings back lots of mid-2000s memories. Never grew Flo, but smoked it many, many times. C99 I had great luck with, both inside and out. Still one of my favorite smokes. Glad to see she's still around!
Wedding Cake crossed with Oaxacan. Best of the old and the new. Great choices for a cross. I'll bet she gets some real hybrid vigor from the diversity of the cross. Have you grown it before, or is this the "test" run?

I'm a little "hazy" on the NY plant count business. I assume 6 mature/6 immature means 6 plants pre-flower and 6 showing sex. I'm using my pothead lawyer skills, lol, to interpret this as:
I can grow 6 autos and 6 photoperiod plants. The autos will show sex just about immediately, making them "mature" and be harvested well before the photos show sex. So I will theoretically never have more than 6 mature/6 immature plants in my garden at one time. Except for whatever length of time it takes for the autos to show sex.

A real lawyer or LEO might disagree with any or all of the above, but that's the plan I'm rolling with.

Hiya PH
Glad to hear your opinion on Green Crack and Jack Herer. I've grown Green Crack inside years ago, and honestly, was a little let down, but this is from a different seed co., so I'm willing to give it another try.
Jack Herer has been one of my dream strains for years, and I'm excited to get a chance to give it a run.

Hey Taz,
I hear you loud and clear! And it is also a matter of finding that keeper pheno!
Like I grew a Glookies which most people told me would be fyah. The plant did give over a 1kg yield, but the weed was mellow.

So I hope you will have crazy phenos and be able to keep mothers or clones.

Hi Wuachuna

I love your idea of putting out long flowering stuff in patches to acclimate it to your micro-climate.
That's about as natural and as old school as a breeding program gets.

An older stoner buddy of mine did that with bagseed in the 70's in a spot about 1/2 mile from where I grew up. With no knowledge of sinsemilla here back then, everything was super-seeded, and the dropped seeds grew back every year.
By the time I was in high school (90's), the patch was pushing out 7' giants with 2' purple colas that were frosty as hell, and super-skunky. And they would finish early. Like end of August early. Unfortunately, the potency of this stuff was about zero!

I believe my buddy's story about starting the patch decades ago, but even if I didn't, I'm pretty sure this patch was not native hemp, as I've seen some of those locally, and the plants were nothing like these.

Anyway, that's my "natural selection" story. Best of luck with your project--I hope you get some bangers out of those crosses!
