Upgrading to the next level (Converting sheds, garages and other premade buildings)

"Marijuana is not addictive. Growing marijuana is."

Hey folks, :tiphat:

So I'm very enthusiastically looking forward to the coming easing of laws we're seeing up here in the Northwest. I'm thinking about buying a second property/ranch soon and legally going big.

Now the properties I'm looking at have neat barns, outbuildings and such to work with. But I'd much rather have new buildings installed that I know are clean, light proof and will give me a couple years of good times.

In doing research on all the different outbuildings out there. I'm wondering what you folks think is the best outbuilding for growing and what you think of converting ready-made sheds and garages into grow rooms?

I'm looking into buildings like this and converting them into grow rooms.

I'm looking for a building that will be largely plug and play. I'm hoping I can pay a few bills, have a couple of buildings delivered, have an electrician rig them up, paint the interior and then be ready to rock. My only concern would be getting water to them.

What do you think? Any experience or thoughts would be helpful.

you can rebuild most standing structures cheaper than you can buy one most of the time
i do know they will drop a pre made 15x30 garage off at your place with 100 bucks down
no credit check in house financing i got one at a local car lot not that large but they haqd them that big mine is 12x16 and used for storage

Red,
How about some interior pics to get the creativity rolling. First off, have the building high enough off the ground so you can intake thru the floor or exhaust if you want. Also you can bring in water and power thru the floor. Make sure you have enough 220w circuits to run AC. Good luck. -granger

I think the first question is how much quantity are you looking to grow? That will establish necessary space for flower and veg, electricity, HVAC needs ect. Also plan to have a designated room for trimming/drying. I'd budget in drilling a well unless your lucky enough to buy near a pond or stream, I couldn't imagine trucking in water all the time that'd suck!

how are you planning on insulating these things?

what about a foundation? you will probably want these things on stem walls with a 24" crawl space underneath... have you factored this into your costs?

IDK... growing indoors in a legal environment seems stupid personally.

you can get a 10,000sq. ft. of poly tunnel for like 40 grand i believe. earth work and power and LDPE film not included.

I think so too, if its legal your planing to bring your crop to market you won't be competitive in a barn paying for hid lights, you'll want a polytunnel. Only benefit I can see is doing it indoor is security, and protecting your plants from cross pollination from a neighboring MJ farm that would contaminate the purity of your strain.

this has been done many of times and has worked. I myself did a new shed this year wired electrical did insulation walled with white plastic boards to reflect the light. nothing to difficult if its on a property with electrical just be creative

I think it depends what state you're in.

In Oregon, with the 4 plant limit ... well, no reason they can't be BIG plants.

The 800 gallon smartpot grows provide some example of that.

After the outdoor harvest, I suppose then it's time to go indoors :woohoo:

Greenhouse with fireplace for heat and supplemental lighting could be the way to create a nice grow-space for the plants, economically.

I'll take the $70 power bill over the $250 power bill anyday !

OH YEAH - one of the nice things about indoor growing in winter is, it can be used to help heat up a space that needs heat anyway.

So a combo workshop/ grow space comes to mind.

As long as the plants get what they need :peacock:

I don't have much to offer here but this is a topic that's been on my mind recently. I'll be sticking around for whatever knowledge y'all are gonna be dropping.

some of the very very large greenhouse complexes in canada run biomass gasification plants that can recycle old plant matter after its compressed into these little pellets and mixed with what ever else... saw dust from some local place.

were talking about canada though.

greenhouses hold heat in better than most people think. in a high hoop poly tunnel you literally have so much air (thermal mass) that the temperature is fairly stable.

in high snow load states you need a gothic arch type... in a high wind area you need additional longitudinal bracing members and different plastic coverings... but all of these things are cheap enough and very fast to build. most systems fit easily on the back of a truck... hence why they are all 30' span max.

you can even buy used poly tunnels from a close by strawberry farm or what ever... have them refurbished, replace the hardware(nuts and bolts) and missing members and save a shit load im guessing.

that being said, when its 20 below or what ever... yea you will need a nice 1+ inch diameter gas line to heat 10,000 sq ft. of poly tunnels.

still though... gas is cheap enough when compared to the ongoing costs of an indoor grow.... electricity, rent or mortgage... property taxes etc.

i really cant see indoor growing on huge scales surviving any legal environment outside of like... small enthusiast or hobbiest types.

I ran hydronic heating in mine ..heres the baby ones ..there was 2 more 98 footers in another area.. hydronic setup on left with scorch marks by door lol...yeehaw..I would look for a place with a decent building and make it badass inside stealth and also do a greenhouse or 2...yeehaw...if you can get a well or by a water source ..your set..i had a spring fed water source in 2 spots and a well in the cellar..water table was about 30 ft down from basement..new England where its cold an snowy

I get this feeling that a number of people fear the idea of outdoor weed grown gracefully legal and out there for everybody to see. I guess its because there is a lot that will change. The hydroponics industry and many other industries that sell materials, gadgets and things used in indoor grows will see a decline in sales. That means loss of jobs, and corporations owning those pot fields. I think this what everybody is really fearing.
