Overgrow 2003 said:Hi everyone! That's what we have done for the last 2 seasons and it's worked great for us. Let's try and see why.... Let's start with June 21 in the northern hemisphere as being the longest day of the year. Everyone knows that right? That's another reason for outdoor growers to ALWAYS own a copy of The Old Farmers Almanac. Looking at the many tables in it you'd see that before June 21 the days get longer by about 2 minutes a day, after June 21 they're growing shorter by the same amount, about an hour of light per month. Let's say that you can plant safely outdoors anytime up north after the 2nd week of May and be free of the threat of frost. O.K. you take your plants out of your indoor room that have thriving on an 18/6 lighting schedule vegging right along. Let's go with a May 20 planting date which would put us at about 1 hour shy of light as the same time on June 21, the longest day of the year. If you plant directly outdoors, even though your plants are getting a reduced number of hours of light daily, it's more than enough to keep them from going into bloom. So, as the days are still getting longer, your plant will continue veging. Remembering that we're losing an hour of daylight per month after the summer solstice, that plant won't sense the shortening days until well into July...not good if you have a short growing season. So what's a short seasoned outdoor northern climate grower to do??? You plunge your plants into TOTAL darkness for a MINIMUM of 36 hours to a MAXIMUM 48 hours right before planting them outdoors in their permanent spot. This will trigger the plant into the first stages of the bloom cycle even though the days are still getting longer!! So that when that plant reaches June 21 she'll already have had the darkness trigger telling her of the shortening days by which at that time, after June 21, they are getting shorter, where she continues on her merry way heading towards her finish. What will this do for YOUR plants?? You will be harvesting anywhere from 2 weeks up to 4 weeks earlier (ime) than by not using this method. If you have a long growing season with good weather up till late in the year you probably won't need to worry about this. However if you're like me and face a short growing season with an early threat of wet or cold weather in the early fall you may benefit from using this method to hurry your girls along. A final thought here...I don't claim this as my original idea however we've used it now for going on 3 seasons seriously and we won't ever do it any other way. Whereas we could be harvesting usually in the old days into October, we're now starting the harvest in the first week of September & wrapped up by the 3rd week using those same strains. Don't believe me here?? O.K. fair enough. But take 2 or 3 of your plants and do a test for yourself. See which ones finish first. I'll guarantee you'll be doing it to all of them next year!!! Let me know if you have any questions, the ganja man is ALWAYS glad to help . Good luck!!! GD >>
