UFC232...the rabbit punches continue.

I love watching any fight (sanctioned fights between professionals that is, not two drunks in an alley beside a bar. if I see a fight happening somewhere like in a street or a bar I turn the other way, I'm not interested in watching sloppy wankers and anyway if I do watch, half the time I'd have to jump in and stop it once the other guy is unconscious and is still getting banged with rights... and it starts off with a yell and a tap on his shoulder "Hey, stop fighting, he's had enough"..ignores me, I grab his hands and say it again..then ..well. ..then sometimes it gets to code red lol).

I watched the Jones Gustafsson bout and once again another MMA fight ends with 3 or 4 punches to the back of the head aka rabbit punches (as well as many more legal punches to the sides of the head)

This happens in boxing too, but less often than in MMA fights. Rabbit punches are banned for a reason. The MMA commentators never mention it. A well timed punch to the back of the head can be deadly, damage the spinal cord or cause brain damage.

MMA refs have to do more to stop this, the MMA bosses have to make tougher rules and penalties for these illegal punches. One punch to the back of the should result in immediate disqualification and fights should be lost if the video later shows a rabbit punch that the ref missed.

Anyone notice how the rabbit punches have been edited out of the UFC232 highlights?....I saw the fight on youtube in it's entirety, rabbit punches and all, a few hours after it was live and counted at least 3 rabbit punches by Jones on Gustafsson seconds before the fight was stopped.

I just watched highlights of the fight today and also another video of the fight and they edited out or cut the finishing punches to the back of his head (the same is often done with fights that end up with one or two of the fighters covered in blood).

It takes just one good bang to the back of your head to make you forget your name and dribble in front of TV for the rest of your life. For those reading who have never fought and wonder what a punch to the back of your head feels like, give yourself a few hits to the base of your skull/top of your spine area with karate "chop" style knife hand, stiffen your hand and hit the area with a few short sharp taps...and then imagine what a full on punch would do. It blow's me away how just about every MMA bout when a fighter has the other fighter's back and is laying in lefts and rights there are punches to the back of the head, this often happens when the face down fighter is already KO-ed. The UFC has to do something about it now.

A punch to the back of the head from a standing position is different to on your knees .
Can`t generate as much power .

The MMA rules say if I aim a punch to the side of your head , then you move your head while I`m throwing then its your fault for not protecting yourself .

Head kicks are more dangerous in my opinion . A well executed kick hits the back / side of the neck . With waaay more energy than a punch from a kneeling position .
Muay Thai Boxing has been around how many years ?

I've been knocked down by head kicks a few times (and been on the giving side a few times too) but I'd rather most head kicks than a knee to my head.....a knee to the head can concuss you into slo-mo mode instantly, nothing thuds like a clean knee to the head.

There are different types of effects I've noticed when I've sparred and got hit or kicked in the head....there's been times my legs have gone all rubbery but my brain was sharp and other times my legs were strong but my brain was blurred. I'm not sure why some ko's or tko's affect just the legs or just the brain? A fast left hook that clips the jaw that I didn't see coming could turn my legs to jelly and side of the head hits would turn my brain to jelly...I guess getting in various head impact zones affects different parts of the brain/body functions.

One upsets your equilibrium system in your ear .
The other works on a nerve attached to your jaw .

Lights out is usually the jaw . Wobbly legs is more often the ear system .

Muay Thai knee is devastating . Whether to the head or the liver .
I watched Muay Thai in Thailand . Left handers have an advantage in that their natural knee attacks the liver . Right hander hits the spleen side of the torso . Nasty , but not the same as a liver shot .

I'e been dropped by a liver punch too (not too many thanks goodness!)...it's surprising how sudden it can drop you and hurt you.

I once doubled up a big drunk idiot who attacked a waitress. I must of hit this guy in the face until I got tired and he didn't even blink..but one little pop to his liver and he went down like a free falling elevator.

You're right, but most pro's above middleweight could kill or permanently maim most people with one well timed and positioned punch to the back of the head from a raised arm rear mount position.

I haven't thrown a punch in anger for 30 years...but just a little while ago I was walking home, one thing led to another and some young guy asked if I wanted to have a go right now. I could tell how he handled himself he was in training,...I just smiled at him, shook my head, turned around, walked away and didn't look back. The best fights are ones you walk or run away from.

I agree , but I`m actually very surprised by the low % of injuries fighters sustain .
I often read the medical suspension list after events .

A lift and throw with the weight of two bodies is what injures peoples necks .

Another factor is what you are describing , KO`s at training .
They accumulate ...
