I run a dual boot of win xp and ubuntu, and just a word of advise if you plan on doing this from a complete reformat. Make sure to install windows FIRST, then run defrag . It is a PITA to get it all to work if you do install ubuntu first(trust me, I went though it and it is a lot of coding to have to do). Other than that, I would recommend making a partition just for your music, and files that you "must have", just in case windows gets screwy on you(you know it will). Running it from the live cd is ok, but there is just a ton of stuff that you cant use that is pretty sweet if you ask me. I also really like how almost everything for it, as far as programs and most codecs, are free

Hello.

Here is a little summary of a great tool to accomplish significant privacy with little effort using a bootable Linux CD with Tor and Privoxy called Incognito and some common sense.

See: http://anonymityanywhere.com/incognito/

It has been noted above that Ubuntu Linux Desktop is free, supported and quite secure right out of the box. It is easy to install and use -- just boot it, answer some questions and run or install it and it runs pretty fast on even older hardware. The Ubuntu Desktop CD/DVD/USB also has a "live-cd" option in the main bootup menu that lets you run it almost anywhere without leaving easily noticeable traces on the PC. Also noted is that there are several other custom "live-cds" such as Knoppix that are easy to use.

However, you are then going to be connecting to the internet and should take some precautions there. The first is to encrypt and reroute your traffic. This is accomplished by applications like Tor and Privoxy. The problem for many users out there is that getting, using and configuring Ubuntu Linux, Tor and Privoxy is difficult.

To make this level of security more obtainable the kind folks on the internet have put these technologies together into a bootable CD called Incognito available at http://anonymityanywhere.com/incognito/. You simply put the CD into your PC, boot it and connect to the internet using Tor and do what you need to do. Tor and Provixy will reroute your network activities all over the internet making them very hard to eavesdrop on.

In the common sense area you still have to think about what your ISP is recording. If you must work from home try rebooting your modem to gain a new IP# (check for this) and then reboot again to change it again after you are done. You should also use Cyber-Cafes, Libraries and Public Wifi to connect whenever possible. Do not use a "friend/family" or other persons computer as now you have a potential "accomplice" issue to deal with should they get questioned. Also at the same time you are doing your work you should also have some average internet use running at the same time by visiting safe sites, gaming or downloading safe software (eg: Ubuntu) at the same time to make eavesdropping even more difficult and have something on the screen that looks OK.

Also in some cases you may want to transfer pictures or other secure files. Note that pictures should be sanitized of camera information, screen-prints or jpeg SW can do this. Also pictures should be secured into a TrueCrypt volume on your media (USB) and please remember to clean and wipe (cellphone) camera memory and their SDRam cards too when done.

I consider the above to be the minimal requirements to have a long life free of worry about these communications. See my other articles about physical site access and pest control.

Thank You
