I stand corrected.

I don't know about rice, but you could probably fill your bong with (the right type of) activated carbon to filter out the nasties.

the idea was to use a two or more chambered water pipe, with the warm water being in the first chamber to filter the smoke and the second chamer with cool to make it feel "smoother". Now that I think about it (ouch), the info may have been in an "Ask Ed" article from HT back then.

The dual chamber water pipe blueprint:

Ah yes, hot bong water... story coming here. Let me preface with this was way back in the high school days, dumb kids who didn't know jack about smoking. I was the first to get my own place, and had a desolate basement that was turned into our tokers den, equipped with bean bags, bongs and black lights. So we got turned onto the hot bong water, we kinda digged it and noticed that it looked like we were blowing out some steam along with the smoke. A few bowls later the stoner wheels got to turning and we came to the conclusion that if we got food coloring and made hot colored bong water that we would blow out colored hits... which when you're naive and stoned sounds like a spectacular idea. So we venture off to the conveniently located grocery store just a few blocks away to pick up a pack of food coloring. After a long search for what was a well hidden package, we left with our food coloring, and our little debbie cakes, and some gum, and a case of the then newly released Gatorade Fierce Lime. We got in and mixed up a color of blue that was so nice crayola should have made crayon out of it. We got the water to what we considered to be the optimum temperature to provide copious steam without likely destroying our respiratory system. After taking our places on the bean bags another light bulb went off and it was decided that this should be done under black lights only so that the hits would not only be colored, but would glow, and that would be #1. So we hit the black lights, which revealed that I hadn't gotten that stain out of my t-shirt, and I fired up the inaugural technicolor hit. Well much to our dismay, and in line with reality, the exhalation wasn't blue nor glowing. So what do you do to console yourself?... that's right, a few more rounds of bong rips. After we finished, we flipped on the lights and immediately started laughing at each other when we realized that everyone had perfectly round, beautifully blue solid circles around our mouths. My laughter soon turned to dismay as I realized that I was less than two hours away from clocking in and waiting some tables. Now, I imagine most of you have experienced just how indelible food coloring is from making easter eggs or some other kitchen adventure. Well after what seemed to be a solid half our of scrubbing I managed to dull the bright blue to todays teal. I was young and didn't realize things like rubbing alcohol would have probably aided my cause, so I ended up having to go sling spaghetti at 2.13 an hour while looking like I just had a hot and heavy make out session with Smurfette.

Try hot water AND rice! As soon as the rice is cooked, it can clog your bong completely.. then when you try pulling, you will be filtering through a rice matrix. AWESOME! I'd like to hear smoke reports on Jasimine

A whole lot of FAIL going on here.

Some people can't handle any moisture in the lungs, so they can't use bongs. But most people can handle it just fine. The point of water pipes is to COOL the smoke, that is all. You do not want to filter anything out of the smoke, mainly because the first thing that gets filtered out is the shit were after!!!

Blend ice for your water pipe, coolest smoothest smoke you can get.

I first heard about the hot water thing from some tweaked out lady working at the head shop. The theory is the cold water traps more THC but an ice bong works wonders so i'l take my chances. I know others will agree ice is the way to go.

No doubt... I caught one of his shows a few months before he died. He was in bad shape on stage, really sad how fast he went downhill.

Pretty good, but unfortunately part of that is untrue. Actually joints are known as the best on your lungs due to the tars and resin becoming drawn to the outside of the paper, then burned. This was a study that was published in Playboy, a friend relayed that. So all you guys hitting bongs thinking your making the safe smoke, your wrong.

You've got a link to that study? I'm always eager to learn new things.

actually, im pretty sure that warm water traps more THC, simply because things that dissolve in water dissolve easier/faster when the water is warmer. i know thc doesn't actually dissolve in water but it gets trapped somehow and hot water probbaly traps more of it. hot water makes the hit sooo much smoother though and makes you cough less, it's totally worth it imo.

I use plain old white rice instead of water, it works great, and it does'nt leave very much resin to clean on the glass.

I change the rice once a week, but it'll last longer.

It takes getting used to it, as the bong does'nt "chug", and the smoke seems a bit more condensed.

Give it a whirl...

Kaos!

I never heard of this but I'm intrigued to find out more.

Does the rise clean the smoke good?.

Also, wouldn't cooked rice be better due to the rice having some water in it and more of its fibers opened from the cooking?.

Rice works as well as water, at least for Me...
If You're using glass with a diffused d-stem, the ash mostly stays in the stem, and will need to be dumped periodically.

Cooked rice?...I would think it would mold overnight, and be a hassle to get out of Your piece.

Like I said before...give it a try, it really does work!

Kaos!
