mmm jenkem, one breath a day keeps the doctor away.In my opinon hot water in a bong is disgusting.I usually put cold water and ice in my bong so I don't know why id want just the opposite.
I don't think anyone has ever made a scientific study of the difference between smoking with a bong or waterpipe (hookah, narghile or shisha) using hot water instead of cold water.
Once you start prowling through studies on water pipe smoking and its supposed ill-effects, you realize how little non-biased information there is about it. NORML has sponsored the best research on this area IMO.
In 2005, The World Health Organisation's Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation (TobReg) issued an advisory note entitled: "Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking: Health Effects, Research Needs and Recommended Actions by Regulators", branding waterpipe smoking as a global public health threat. Nevertheless, it concerned tobacco smoking, and enemies of Cannabis often seem to simply transfer these results over on Cannabis smoking.
My conclusion from the few serious research studies on smoking cannabis with water pipes is that the water takes out 90% of the harmful substances. Tar apparently does get through, but 50% less than if you smoke through an ordinary pipe or a handrolled joint without filter. The reason why you end up inhaling fair amounts of tar is that Cannabis smokers inhale more deeply and hold in the smoke in a way that tobacco smokers don't. Waterpipes also filter out more psychoactive THC than they do other tars, thereby requiring users to smoke more to reach their desired effect.
As to the hot water, my guess is that tar compounds bond easier with oxygen or water molecules the warmer it gets, making the smoke potentially more 'dangerous' than cool smoke.

your post is right on, but this hypothesis isnt. If the "tar compounds bond easier with oxygen or water molecules the warmer it gets," warm water would do a better job filtering out toxins than cold water, and the smoke would be cleaner.
as long as it isn't steamy hot it shouldn't be a problem.
I also noticed health problems from smoking out the ice bong. inhaling all that cold moisture. My solution was to get a longer tube and put only a lil ice at the bottom. It seemed to help a good bit.
BTW warm water with ice on a catch is nice.
but regular warm water is good for old people. they can breathe it in deeper. cold smoke cramps weak lungs sometimes.
I remember (barely!) an article I read back in the 80's that warm (not hot) water would filter the tars and other nasties out better than cold. But, cold water "feels" better on the lungs. So, the idea was to use a two or more chambered water pipe, with the warm water being in the first chamber to filter the smoke and the second chamer with cool to make it feel "smoother". Now that I think about it (ouch), the info may have been in an "Ask Ed" article from HT back then. I tried it and it seemed to work a little better, unfortunately that bong is long gone ! Can someone here test it out ? Interesting stuff indeed !
