That's a bit harsh on McCain, I mean clearly he was trying to capitalize on the idea of getting more women into higher levels of politics. His big slip up was that he didn't vet her thoroughly enough. I'm not sure if that was a time issue or if it was because his brain issues were starting to affect him? Whatever the case though it all worked out for the best. Him losing and his health issues positioned him perfectly to stop Trump from taking affordable healthcare away without having something to immediately replace it and millions of americans benefited greatly by that now famous thumbs down vote. You're right about the stupidity ruling the Trump led republican party though. McCain made it clear to everyone that he would vote against repealling the ACA without something to replace it first. Trump miscalculated and obviously thought that the republican party's desire to kill the ACA would override McCain keeping his word.
