true african strains from africa

I know it is probably not a pure African, but I just grew a small Nirvana Swazi 12/12 from seed and really liked it, it has the authentic spicy, unique taste of Swazi that some describe as licourice. Took exactly 90 days from seed.

I still want to see all the examples and taste them all to tell the difference. IMO "African Strains" as a generic catch phrase has become a bit of a joke with Durban Poison sold on the net as an import adaptation. The THC levels indicated on some of the sales windows are also questionable when deciding on a pure strain. DP is said to a very potent strain(by the Native Zulu People), VERY SCARCE in real life. I have never tasted any.

I live in that part of the world, and being a smoker I should know that its scarce. Another thing that a Dutch friend of mine told me is that you must ALWAYS QUESTION seed bank hype..

That’s my experience guys, not to offend any seed banks, because I know that Afroman is very together with regards African Landrace.

Some other South Africans may want to debate the question of scarcity as well as THC levels? I wish someone will come and tell the authentic story about this "strain", I am almost convinced that it was an Indian import during the time of British Colonial Rule. Now, will the real DP please stand up?

Do yourself a favor and speak to Afroman before you pay big bucks for this strain..

Drop a PM to Sam Skunkman, he will know the poison story..

ngakpa,
Hi, hope you guys don't mind be jumping in, but I have a burning desire to grow DP. I'm running both Afropips and Seedsman version of Durban Poison. I have heard that the DP which comes in sticks or pencils was the DP that was the "kind". I'm growing outdoors and have lost track of which is which. (rain washed the names off the pot). So far one female showing and no males. I'm roughly the same lattitude (north) as SA. I would like to know the nute requirements for the DP, how does DP handle the heat and humidity? When should it be harvested ( % cloudy, % amber) I'm really excited to be growing DP have wanted it for years.

Love those thin leaves

Hey Ancient one. I f I may ask: what country you from? That may be a good starting point. In my opinion, Afroman from Afropips, is the man to ask. Just drop him a personal line, he is way more than willing to help out.
I say all this with a pang of guilt for not having answered your question in the other post before. You have stunning plants there, but I will make a few phonecalls about the strain's growing details. I can only vouch that Durban is a Sub Tropical city. In fact the whole east coast here is subtropical.
One thing I can tell you sir, is that it is perhaps one of the most potent original sativa strains ever. Unaltered original DP is more than just mj. It has a spiritual element to the experience. Very visual, and if you are in a good mood, it could come close to a mild mushroom buzz for a while. (my experience)

I had my first shroom 4weeks ago, and it reminded me of DP. Thats all I have for you. As for growing DP... VERY TALL PLANT. Beware(although you seem to be set up well for just that :) )

Please let me know if I make any sense here! I learn so much every day, I not always what I know and dont... lol

A friend of mine just received some seeds from Gypsy, and in the package were some freebies noted:

"Freebie!!!
S African DP X
Skunk 1
Sam the Skunkyman"

I got on this thread to help my friend decipher what the "DP" strain was. So having read this much, I guess we are definitely talking a Durban Poison X Skunk #1, which will be totally/75%+ sativa.

I am of mixed feelings about this as there is absolutely NO vertical space nor appropriate time window for a sativa grow at my friend's shed, but conversely, several posts have implied DP as being of high quality. If anyone has info on this cross or a strain report, it would be great to hear of it.

These boards are great in terms of finding info fast and easy. Thanks everyone.

Dude, do you know me? I didn't tell anybody about this. I too received S African DP X Skunk 1 from Sam the Skunkyman via a Gypsy order freebie. I too am growing in a shed that gives me problems when growing a stretchy strain. However, my cycle is setup for 10 weeks, so I seriously debating popping a couple of this biatches. Hit me up on PM if you find out anything about this strain or if your buddy pops his beans.

I don't think I know anyone at this site personally. But my friend has serious artharitis (sp?) and finds pure indica strains best for his medicinal needs. He runs a small grow at under 3 ft. total height, so he has a very tight scrog system where the stem is actually bent below and around the lip of the pot so that the buds are literally growing from the level of the soil, which is nearly impossible. It is also under a 400 watt hps with a double glass shield/double air intake system. Since hps 400 watt fries anything closer than 5 inches, the grow is even tighter. But the second shield is cool to the touch and the buds can literally touch it at the end of the grow. This works fine with indica strains for 9-10 weeks. But it is insane and just impossible with sativa strains that stretch and have a much longer flower. We begin training as young seedlings before even the second set of leaves.

I would like to say that we have since found info on the Skunkyman's SADP x Skunk#1. In that post, some argued that the seeds were over five years old and some claimed they were as old 13 years. Many many folks claimed not a single bean popped, but one woman stated it was her favorite smoke and that she had grown hers out of 1/10 which happened to be female. She said she had revegged three times without taking clones and then the mother lost vigor and died, so she lost the genes.
Many said the beans would crack but not send out the white tap root.

Our expereince is that we have had great success with a light bit of liquid Maxicrop sea weed at half strength and a few drops of Superthrive in the water we mixed up for our paper towels. All of our Nirvana indica beans popped in under 48 hours. They are absolutely beautiful and I can tell the genes are awsome with the possibility of purps even at this early stage.

5 of the S.A.D.P.xskunk#1 have yet do anything after 72 hours. The other five cracked and one sprouted a tap root and were put in the soiless mix under the CFL at the shed. But no S.A.D.P.xSkunk#1 have made it above the dirt yet. Only 3 indica have, however, to put it in context. On the S.A.D.P.xSkunk#1 we did do the scuff on sandpaper before throwing them in the wet paper towels as this had been suggested on other boards by growers who had had actual sucess.

So I hope I didn't scare anybody through coincidence and Happy Halloween and Sam Hain. And also I can't PM anyone till after 50 posts. But that is where we are on our current crop at the shed. We plan to take two clones of each plant and put into 12/12 relatively quickly. A basic immediate 12/12 with no veg for the sativa.

Any questions feel free to yell, and I hope I didn't hijack anyone's post.

Peace,
The Afficianado

I am breeding Naiji varieties from a tiny pepper black bagseed from Nigerian bought @ a friends coffeeshop. I have a major advice to anyone with african plants. The earth in Africa is base. I think i read somewhere that just as the tap water in a'dam, Lake Tanzanika in Zambia is PH 8.0.

Nigerian Background-

NYCD cut- Right lavender cut- Center Somaskunk mom-left

This tiny dark black pepper landrace nigerian bagseed, was planted in just ~2.5 ga pot with canna professional plus + soft broken down barks and peat and gru to 14 ft. out of the balcony and into the courtyard in A'dam.

To finish her seeds she had to be weighted down from the top, bent over and tipped through the back door and into living room on stormy days.

Hello TTB,I just wanted to agree with you about my experiences of DP,it is one of my fave plants also, very trippy and creative but not for learner's with a delicious almost acidic flavour like no other weed i've tried. I grew three types of DP in the 90's:
1.The seed bank(SamS) version which was a great, vigorous easy to grow plant with wide leaves for a Sativa,a nice slightly liquorice taste and an initially high then quite stony buzz. Not tall for a Sat and VERY Uniform(Typical SamS)!
2.DP from seed from brown paper wraps of about 2 grams approx bought in bundle of about 50 for a very cheap price that escapes me now,In a Small township in the KZN. When U unwrapped the little parcels the stickiest most potent smelling nearly seedless cannabis was waiting for you. Almost lime green and black at the same time it was almost like it had been been dipped in teacle. The high was very strong and almost paranoid at first but after a few joints It was extremely pleasant and meditative then almost trippy when U smoke a lot. It was almost like being allergic then getting used to it after a while.
When grown indoors at home they were quite uniform in taste, smell and appearance but differed in potency and vigour with 2 in 10 being super-potent fast growing.Thin but tight buds with lots of little stalked Trich's and not close but uniform internodal spacing. Flowered in avg. of 12/14 weeks,Tripled in size since 12/12 and made the most Original tasting finger hash I have smoked ever..like pear drop sweets! Lost seeds of my F2's in eviction in late 90's and still haven't got over it:[
3.DP from a Backyard/forest grower in Pondoland that had been grown since the 70's when it's ancestors apparently been mixed with a different 'Transkei' strain that was taller. The resulting cross is whats been grown since by lots of people in the area.By the way if its a help the Locals beleived that Poison was an adapted pure Indian(Sub-continent) strain that had got used its new conditions over a century or two.I only smoked his last years crop as plants were still budding and it was strong but tasted fermented.
His biggest plants were about 10feet tall and similar in appearance to my other DP but with really long fingered leaves on it that I obviously never saw indoors when I grew it out myself l8r. A small difference was larger but more running calyxes and more but not so stalked Trichomes as the brown paper DP.It had asimilar high but less stone and a more complex smell/taste with spicyness added to Aniseed or liquorice DP flavour.
When grown indoors it Quadripled in size after 12/12 and took usually 14/15 weeks to mature. They were semi-uniform in appearance and size and they all were potent but not as devestating as DP2 was. I never got these to F2 unfortunately but they were easier to germ than DP2.! Never made hash from it either.
My favourite was the Brown paper Durban Poison scored from KZN as it was so Irreplacable, but I wiill be back to the Motherland soon and won't stop til track some down! JBo
