i take melatonin...its what your body naturally produces to make you get sleepy. comes in a variety of mg..1,2,3,5. i take around 6mg and i sleep great!! but your dreams get kinda crazy i have found. very imaginative.

The best thing ime for getting to sleep at night is getting up in the morning. (Boring I know, but true)

I get up at 6.30am nowadays (it's 7am here now!) and see plenty of the day. It's the sunlight - particularly in the morning - that helps the body produce melatonin. It's melatonin that makes you wanna sleep at night.

You could buy it but if you get up in the mornings you'll save yourself some cash!

At the risk of sounding like my old man, the morning is the best time of the day for getting things done with your day too. If I haven't done the bulk of my days work by lunchtime then I probably won't be getting it done.

That's coming from someone that's spent many a morning sleeping it away - recovering.! :bat:

Early to bed, early to rise - makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

That's a very true statement for a multitude of reasons. :D

^ damn, you're so right. I hate getting into the habit of sleeping really late and waking up late.

I want to try and sleep early once and wake up refreshed at 7am. I wake up at 6 am all the time to get to school but I'm half asleep all day from lack of sleep and then i still seep late at night.

if you want to sleep early, get rid of any tv/ computer in the bedroom (that is my problem).

melatonin is okay if you take it once in a while. Yes melatonin gives your freaky dream (for a lot of people), I've had some totally messed up trippy dreams when I take melatonin but the dreams go away if you take it all the time. If I take melatonin when I'm also really tired and can get at least 8-9 hours of sleep then it's pretty much guaranteed that I will have some crazy dream, inlcuding lucid dreams. Kind of cool.

If you are looking for natural stuff I think that camomile tea should do the trick. It is relaxing and sleep inducing. It's worth a shot. Others are Lemon balm and valerian root.

On the other hand I agree with Visions of Shiva that getting up in the morning when the sun is coming up is probably the best sleep remedy after all. The day seems longer and so will the good night's rest.

A good oldfashioned homecooked meal will always do the trick.

Hope it works

oh wow, considering the fact that Im an addict I know all about sleeping problems. Unless you want to permanently fuck up your sleep, dont even think about resorting to more than 3 pills a night. Not necessarily addictive, but dependent? YES. dont u ever mistake the power of sleeping pills and what they can do to your liver after years and years of usage. Im sure they would have some effect on the enzymes after a while.

also reduce the lighting in your house during the evening. don't have bright lights on at night.

but like mentioned if you've never taken melatoning, it will knock you out (it'll make you really sleepy) after 30 minutes.

kava kava helps you sleep, but not the crap in the pills that doesnt work you have to get the root powder and make tea from it.

anyways have any of you guys ever tried polyphastic sleep, its where you take naps like 6 times a day for a 20 minutes instead of sleeping in 1 chunk. supposedly it forces your body to instantly to into the rem stage of sleep instead of after a couple hours. also you only have to sleep for 2 hours a day and you are better rested than if you slept for 10. its supposed to help a lot if you are one of those people that can never fall asleep and if you go back to sleep after your alarm goes off. the reason most people have this problem is because their circadian rythm is set off a couple hours past their schedule. anyways heres a link about it if you want to try it

http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/10/polyphasic-sleep/

this guy tried it for like 90 days and he said it worked great but it conflicted too much with his schedule because he had to take naps in the middle of his meetings and shit so he had to go back to regular sleep.

Fat Sam - let me try to help.

First off, "Early to bed, early to rise" DOES seem to be true. I have been doing this the last 3 weeks, and I am SO much more productive, I feel better, everything is better.
There is a book called Lights Out, that talks about how when the electric light was invented it really screwed up a lot of people. Getting out of touch with the natural light/dark rythmns of the earth do have effects on humans. Check out that book.

Someone mentioned Steve Pavlina's blog at StevePavlina.com. He actually has a blog on becoming an early riser. I started reading this 3 weeks ago or, and it all sounded good. His idea is to get up at the same time every morning, no matter what. Since you get used to a fixed wakeup time, the idea is to then listen to when your body is tired at night, and go to bed when you sense this.

It wasn't until I read another blog from another lady that things fell into place for me. Many times over the last 10 years I had tried to become an early riser. I would get up early day after day, say 6 am, and go running. But invariably I couldn't fall asleep at night.

But what works for me beautifully these last 3 weeks, is to just put on candlelight after 7pm. Artificial lights, any kind, actually go into your brain and stop it from producing melatonin. So for many people they won't get the natural tired feeling they are supposed to get. I get this now, and its great. Everynight I fall asleep when my body wants me to, which is how we did for all our years of humanity, except the last 100 years or so since the invention of the lightbulb.

This works beatifully, but a few words of caution. Don't uses stimulants in the latter half of the day. They've done studies that 200 mg of caffeine given to people when they wake up, STILL negatively affects their sleep when they go to bed. So be careful with that.

Last night I smoked weed at 6:30, and it totally stimulated my mind and didn't allow the natural feeling of tiredness to come over me until probably 1.5-2 hours later than it should have normally. I really noticed the difference. This might be different with indica weed, as I think I had some sativa... but if your not sure, then don't smoke. I know what you mean how it didn't help. I was just tossing and turning in bed wondering why I wasn't getting tired like I normally do.

Normally now, after I put on the candleights. I will notice I start yawning a few times over the hour, and then soon the melatonin will start becoming noticable. Its almost like a drug-like feeling. It feels really good.

G'luck. PM if you have any more questions I'd like to see you have success in this.

I should add. I usually fall asleep now between 8-9. I wake up naturally between 5:30-6 normally. I wake up and am TOTALLY AWAKE. I feel very focused, have energy..and this just carries with me the rest of the day.

I have noticed so many positive benefits from this, that I doubt I will ever stop doing it. I have been a go-to-bed-late, and wake up late person my entire life... I always knew it was screwing with me... and now I see the difference so noticably. It was weird the first few days being up before 6 and being awake. But trust me I got used to it, since it feels like such an advantage and just overal positive for me.

I just wish I knew the things I knew now, back in high school. I know my high school years would have been so much better, actually having energy during the day. And college I missed so many classes because I was always so tired...

Now my energy levels are pretty high all day long. And they are sustainable. I don't get any lows in my energy. I also am not taking ANY type of drug, even caffeine... I don't even use ginseng anymore.

I'm starting to think the human body has all it needs to feel its optimum level. It just we need to give it the ultimate resting conditions so it can heal itself. There is research saying that 8 hours of sleep before 10 pm is better than 8 hours of sleep after midnight. Being in tune with the natural cycles does seem to make a difference.
