Selctive Service (A brief history )

When people make a general statement like we are stretched too thin
in the Number of Military Soldiers , I am not sure they are thinking of how things could go.
I know i had to register for the selective service.
and i know my mom was not happy with it after seeing one of her other
boys mangled in Nam.

I guess the point i am trying to make is the one resource we are not running out of is young Men and Women. and i don't want to see any one go to a place we really do not have to be in.

A couple of Resources we are shy of is an honest Government
and Inteligence in our Intel Agencies

The military drafted conscripts during the Civil War, both world wars and between 1948 and 1973. From 1948 until 1973, during both peacetime and periods of conflict, men were drafted to fill vacancies in the armed forces which could not be filled through voluntary means. The Selective Service System was reincorporated in 1980 to maintain a registry of 18-year-old men, but call-ups have not occurred since the Vietnam War.

In 1973, the draft ended and the U.S. converted to an All-Volunteer military.

The registration requirement was suspended in April 1975. It was resumed again in 1980 by PRESIDENT CARTER in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Registration continues today as a hedge against underestimating the number of servicemen needed in a future crisis.

Oh yes, definately. I guess I should have added that point, none are willing to draft. Involuntary extensions and inactive reserve call ups, yes, but actually pull from the Selective Service lottery - none will risk their political careers doing that one, calling up the draft. Until they have no choice, that is.

There were a few times, I seriously thought they might - especially when they started getting desperate and lowered enlistment standards, even upping the maximum first time enlistment age requirements. - And still got very few takers.

I mean no disrespect to the soldiers but I saw this and thought it was damn funny.

Charles Rangell(D) of New york has proposed the draft numerous times.

As for the passed bill....it will be vetoed in no time! Bushs second stroke of the pen if Im not mistaken. There will be no pull out....period. Not in 09 either. Republicans will take that race too. But that last part is just my opinion.
