Transplanting Regimen

I don't think anyone said this yet. The way I know when to bump up to the next size pot is to wait until the roots start poking out the holes in the bottom of your pot. Once this happens transplant to the next size up within a day or two.

I think that transplanting a vegged plant right before flowering (3 or 4 days before) into the next size bigger pot is beneficial.

plants will usually let you know when to pot up. when they drink up the water in a day it's a sure sign here. it may be different in the desert but i'll never know cause i ain't moving to a dry wasteland anytime soon.lol.
if i really want to know how the roots are doing i jsut pop the plant out of pot and look with my eyes. no guessing there, hehe.

I agree,I totally go by watering schedule when determining if transplanting is needed. When I find myself having to water every other day,its a good indication.I've never personally experienced roots growing out drainholes although it seems quite common,I'd bet its a result of too large a starting container 90% of the time. The roots will grow along the sides and right out the holes leaving a "big empty" in the middle.

I like what soilman says about both transplanting and watering...so I won't blather on..Im stoned anyway. Had a hard day at work and I am like late 50's real late 50's years old.

soilman: You said you could get 4 oz from a plant in 3 gallon bucket. Are mine capable of that in their 4.5 gallon pots? Did you LST or SCROG to get 4 oz?

Good luck to all of you out there!!!!
Check my diary/gallery. I like comments even if they are complimentary.Old tough skin here.

Clear pots really screw your plants up as you can see from my grow here :sasmokin:

4.5 gallon pots Plants in back are just over 4 feet tall. One is Ice one is an AI.

Ice at day 31 flower.

Hehehehehehee. I know that feeling. I had really GOOD vision all my life....until I was about 43-44. Then it went south, slowly. I did granny glasses, but now wear bifocals, not much correction even now though. I dont need to wear them out hunting, etc.

New grow pics tonight :)

My plants are making me happy! I hope everyone out there is feeling good about their plants.

PS

If I get lucky and get 4oz off any one of these plants, happy won't begin to describe my attitude!! :sasmokin:

I usually use the top growth as an idicator to repot. I envision equitable root growth with top growth, so if it looks twice as big or more than the pot, I repot. With soft plastic nursery pots it is easy to inspect the root ball without damaging the plant.

When I transplant from 2-4 weeks of vegetation, from 16oz cups to 1 gallon containers, I give my first feeding. For every gallon of water, plus my nutrients (Fox Farm at 1/4 strength) I use:

1 tsp Liquid Karma
1 tsp SM-90

at the transitional phase, between week 4-5, I transplant into a 2 gal container, use 1/4 strength nutes and:

1/4 tsp Liquid Karma
1/4 tap Neptunes Liquid Seaweed
1/2 tsp SM-90

I use for any further transplants, whether to finish in a 3 gal - 5 gal nursery container:

1/4 tsp Liquid Karma
1/4 tsp SM-90
per gallon of water

I tone down on the suppliments, nutes of course, the farther along in the flowering period.

I grow mainly Inides and Indie dom plants and have found this works well for me.

-----

SM-90 WARNING: It is believed (not proven with any empirical evidence) that SM-90 is a systemic additive and is not a 'good' product for medicinal growers. The jury is out on just how much this product does as far as pest control, disease control and how it increases motabloism in plants. I have been in discussion with the owner of Nutrilife for the past few months and even she doesn'thave all the answers as to how and what all this liquid can do. It is labeled as non-toxic for plants and humans, but one that is highly susceptable to allergies or other medical conditions that would react with this is strongly advised to research alternatives before using. CAVEAT EMPTOR!

I tried using visual growth as a transplant indicator but found with different pheno's it was too difficult to gauge. If you start a stretchprone DP Flo cut and a stocky blockhead cut side by side,When each is demanding water every other day they will be of varying heights, the flo towering over the blockhead. We always have to remember what works best for us is the goal no matter the procedure,I imagine if I grew one pheno only transplanting by foliage growth would be simple

I can see where you are coming from, however with all the different strains I grow I have found it pretty universal. One thing that has aided in usign this gauging system is the use of SM-90 in my feedings. I know that the rootball is going to be healthy and robust in dealing with any strain.

I currently have Sat doms and Indie doms running, of 8 different strains that I have never grown out, and the procedure is consistant from plant to plant. I have yet to encounter a rootbound plant nor an underdeveloped one. I do attribute this consistancy to use of SM-90. Otherwise, I would utilize a different method.

You have twice the number of pheno's going than me!Sounds like you have your procedure downpat.I guess my pheno's are pretty close in height when I transplant,I've been judging by watering frequency for so long I hardly notice anymore lol.Right now the closest I have to a sat. is female seeds grapefruit, the shorter pheno is doable with my indicas
