TOP TEN OF FUNNY HISTORY ABOUT STRAIN

History of the Chemdawg Family

At a Grateful Dead show at Deer Creek Amphitheatre, 'joebrand' (aka 'wonkanobe') and 'pbud' met 'chemdog' and sold him an ounce of very high quality pot for $500. joe and chemdog exchanged numbers and they later arranged for two ounces to be shipped to chemdog on the east coast. According to chemdog, one ounce was seedless and the other had 13 seeds.

In ’91, chemdog popped the first 4 seeds. From these seeds, one male was found and disposed of (chemdog was young, you can’t blame him). The 3 females were labeled ‘chemdawg’ (now ’91 chemdawg), ‘chemdawg a’ (now chemdawg’s sister), and ‘chemdawg b’. In '01, chemdog and his girlfriend attempted to germ 3 more seeds, labeled ‘c’, ‘d’, and ‘e’. the ‘e’ seed never germinated, ‘c’ turned out to be junk (according to chemdog), and chemdawg ‘d’ was the keeper. In '06, 'chemdog' and 'joebrand' reunited and joe was given 4 of the last 6 beans: Chemdawg phenos 1-4, '4' being the chosen keeper. Joe thought the '4' was the best representation of the original and thus dubbed it the 'reunion pheno'. Chemdog still has two seeds left in his stash.

Chemdawg Crosses:
• 'OG Kush' (the original cut) came from an s1 seed from a bag of '91 Chemdawg in the Lake Tahoe area in 1996.
• 'Sour Diesel' aka ECSD came from an accidental cross of ('91 Chemdawg x Mass Super Skunk/NL)x DNL after the DNL hermed and seeded the room. The DNL's lineage is NL/Shiva x Hawaiian.
• Original Diesel' (also known as Diesel #1, Headband, Daywrecker Diesel, Underdawg) came from a cross of '91 Chemdawg x (Mass Super Skunk x Sensi's Northern Lights) done by a guy known as ‘weasel’.

• 'chemdog' and friends made several crosses that are held closely by a small group of friends and acquaintances. Among them are:

1. Super Snowdawg (Bubble Chem x [Super skunk x Oregon Sno])
2. Giesel (Chem D x Mass Super Skunk)
3. Bubble Chem (Chemdawg’s Sister x Sag's Bubbleberry)
4. Dawg Daze aka ChemHaze (Chem D x ’93 Sensi's NL#5/Haze)
5. Chemdawg D x Pbud (another old-school Colorado strain)

JJ-NYC has been working on a Chemdawg D-based seed line for several years now. He started by crossing Chemdawg D to Sensi's Afghani after thoroughly testing both Sensi's Afghani and Sensi's Hindu Kush to determine which was more stable and would be better for the initial cross. JJ then did a backcross, known as "Double Dawg." Several phenos of this circulate and several people still have beans. JJ's latest work to the line is a second backcross known as "Tres Dawg" which is just starting to get tested.

Rezdog of Reservoir Seeds recently released several Chemdawg crosses as part of his 'Trinity' charity auctions. The crosses included Chemdawg D x Sensi's Hindu Kush and Snowdawg x Sensi's Hindu Kush, Chemdawg D x Sour Diesel IBL, Snowdawg x Sour Diesel IBL, ChemHaze x Sour Diesel IBL and Giesel x Sour Diesel IBL.

The White Widow is without a doubt one of the most successful commercialized cannabis strains on the market today. Perhaps that is also why its history is so problematic. This most famous plant has since its birth in 1994 won a number of awards, including first price in the 1995 High Times Cannabis Cup. Known to be highly resinous and extremely potent, the plant has the ability to humble even the most experienced smoker and has been used in the making of countless new hybrids, always improving on quality.

The name White Widow is usually linked with several different breeders and today almost every seed bank offers its own version of the plant. The battle over who actually invented the strain has turned into a political struggle, dividing the public into two camps. Some believe that the White Widow was discovered by a man named Ingemar, while others take the side of another skillful breeder known as Shantibaba. Although the history of this plant is complicated and shrouded by doubt and misinformed opinions, the truth must be that only one person can be accredited with bringing White Widow into the world. My research has lead me to believe that this person is indeed Shantibaba, the former co-owner of Green House Seeds and current founder of The Mr Nice Seedbank, for reasons that I will explain in this article.

Mr Nice Black Widow

The White Widow strain was first released to the public by Shantibaba, shortly after he founded the Green House Seed Company in 1994 with a Dutch partner named Arjan. The pedigree of this famous sativa/indica hybrid is made up of a pure Brazilian sativa mother and a South Indian, Keralan hybrid father. The exact origins of the mother plant remains somewhat of a mystery but the most educated guess is that it could possibly be the old school, Brazilian landrace Manga Rosa, which has a long history of spiritual use. The Father was discovered during a trip to India where Shantibaba was approached by a man, who after sharing a joint with him, eventually led him to his farm in the mountains of Kerala. The farmer then introduced him to an indica hybrid that had been selectively cultivated and bred towards optimum resin production in his village for a very long time. After several days of sampling the farmer’s plants, Shantibaba left for the Netherlands with a batch of fresh seeds, from which he was soon to discover the male for his White Widow cross. He eventually bred it to the Brazilian Sativa mother, forming the spectacular White Widow.

No other indica plant besides the legendary G-13 has accumulated such widespread recognition and fame as the Northern Lights Afghani. The original Northern Lights plants were pure indicas but later hybrids were released with a bit of Thai Sativa in their pedigree. This probably accounts for the fruity taste and great, almost psychedelic, high that this plant is known for today. Although most of the subsequent plants were bred towards an indica expression, there are still sativa phenotypes popping up now and then as a reminder of the genetic history of the plant.

Making its way from the Pacific North West to the Netherlands in 1985, the Northern Lights arrived in the possession of Neville Schoenmaker. Neville was the owner of Holland's first cannabis Seed Company known as The Seed Bank, which later was renamed Sensi Seeds under new ownership. According to the most credible source; Northern Lights was originally bred by a man known as “The Indian” on an Island near Seattle Washington in the United States. Some also claim that the plant originated in California before ending up in the hand of this mysterious man from Seattle but there is no conclusive evidence to support this. Apparently there were a total of eleven plants that were labeled Northern Lights #1 through Northern Lights #11. Northern Lights #5 was said to have been the best of the bunch, with Northern Lights #1 coming in at a close second. The original Northern Lights plants were described to be true breeding Afghanis with extreme indica characteristics. They were dark green in color and very stable, with a high flower to leaf ratio while sporting a piney taste and purple hues in flowering. They were also known to be highly resinous with a THC percentage over 15%, sometimes higher.

Original Northern Lights #5 CuttingThe story goes that all the various Northern Lights plants that were given to Neville Schoenmaker at the Seed Bank were female clones. Soon after, many new plants showed up on the Seed Bank list, including several different Northern Lights strains. This is where the history begins to get a bit hazy. How exactly these new seeds came to be is unclear but apparently Neville Schoenmaker used the plants that he got from the Indian to create new hybrids by further crossing them to some males of Afghani origin. He might have acquired them from the same source as the females but the Northern Lights males were never labeled, so their history remains unclear. The best guess is that Neville Schoenmaker created the new seeds by further hybridizing and inbreeding the plants that he acquired from the Indian to his old stock. Northern Lights #1 was described as a true breeding Afghani IBL (inbred line), suggesting that it contained none of the Thai Sativa that was later incorporated into some of the Northern Lights strains. At what point the Thai Sativa was infused into the genetic lineage is however unclear. Most likely it was bred into the Northern Lights #2 hybrid at some point. Regardless of their origin or genetic makeup, two particular males labeled Northern Lights #1 and Northern Lights #2 are clearly mentioned as the fathers of many new plants in a Seed Bank catalogue from the 1980’s. Northern Lights #2, a wonderfully potent Northern Lights #1-Hindu Kush hybrid, is still offered by Dutch Passion under the name Oasis. There is also some Northern Lights #2 in Aurora B from The Flying Dutchmen.

Dutch Passion Oasis - Northern Lights #2The two Northern Lights males fathered several potent and exotic hybrids that included the notoriously potent G-13 female as well as Big Bud, Skunk #1, Hash Plant, Haze and Swazi, among others. One of the more noteworthy unions from this time was the Northern Lights #5 x Northern Lights #2 hybrid, which now no longer exists. The only strains from this collection that are still available at Sensi Seeds today are Hash Plant, which is made up of one quarter Northern Lights #1, as well as G-13 x Hash Plant, Black Domina and Big Bud with a slightly smaller portion of the same Northern Lights genes. Four-Way is also one quarter Northern Lights although it does contain some Cannabis Ruderalis, so it might not be the best choice for everyone. It might however appeal to the outdoor grower looking for auto-flowering or fast flowering varieties. The original Lowryder was also partly made up of Northern Lights #2 for those interested in the history of auto-flowering outdoor cannabis strains.

Sensi Seeds Hash PlantThe genetic lineage of the various Northern Lights plants quickly becomes confusing since the entire line is diverse but also closely related and inbred. However, the Northern Lights #5 clone, which was considered the most superior plant of the bunch, was apparently never sold in seed form and must therefore have been the only unaltered version of the original plants. The pure Northern Lights #5 Afghani indica was used to create several outstanding and potent hybrids in combination with many of the strains that The Seed Bank had to offer at the time. Although many of these Cannabis Cup winners are now extinct, some are still available in seed form today at Sensi Seeds. These plants are also the closest relatives to the glorious Northern Lights #5 mother that Sensi Seeds has to offer. Most notable of these strains are the Northern Lights #5 x Haze, Northern Lights #5 x Skunk #1 or Shiva Skunk, Silver Pearl and last but not least; Jack Herer, the main ingredient in the now legendary Cinderella99. The glorious Jack Herer is a superior plant that forms a union between the three most important building blocks of modern cannabis strains; Northern Lights, Skunk and Haze.

Of all the commercially available cannabis strains today, few have accumulated such a legendary reputation and sprouted so many urban myths as the mysterious G13 Afghani indica. It has even found its way into American cinema, contributing to the already large wall of mysticism surrounding this plant. Where this plant came from and whether or not it actually ever existed has been the subject of countless debates. By following the faint trace that this plant has left behind it, we are drawn to the U.S in the 1970’s, where this legendary plant supposedly originated from.

According to the most reliable story, written by Jesse for the Treat Yourself Magazine, this plant was apparently liberated by an unknown assistant from a government research facility at the University of Mississippi. The G13 was part of a project run by a Dr. Carlton Turner, who was conducting research on both cannabis sativa and cannabis indica drug strains. One thing is known for a fact and that is that Neville Schoenmakers, who also founded the Seed Bank, got a hold of a clone marked G13 some way or the other. Opinions vary but apparently it was given to him by man called Sandy Weinstein, who had a friend working at the government research facility in Mississippi. The G13 was found among a batch of Afghani indicas labeled G1 through G23. The G13 was said to be highly superior to the others, sporting fast indoor flowering, massive resin production, excellent potency and extreme hybrid vigor.

Airborne G13 CuttingAnother story points towards a man named Michael Hallman, who had acquired a lot of cannabis strains during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Following his arrest, these strains ended up in the possession of the CIA and FBI and were later used to genetically engineer the notorious G13 cannabis strain in secret government labs. I leave it up to you to decide which story sound more plausible.

With an alleged THC percentage of over 28 percent, this variety would be rated as one of the most potent strains to date. This can however be disputed. Research conducted at the University of Mississippi as part of the Potency Monitoring Project (PMP) show no records of strains with a potency higher than 9.5%, which is fairly low compared to most commercial strains that can be found today. PharmChem Laboratories Inc. also tested selected strains for potency during this time but never reported THC levels higher than 14 percent. People who smoked the real G13 on the other hand said that it was very potent. These inconsistencies point towards another source than the U.S government, perhaps some private grower.

There are a couple of theories on where the plant got its name, one being that the G stands for “government” and that the number 13 is simply the number of a plant from a certain seed line which proved to be of excellent quality. The other theory is that the name G13 stands for “Greenhouse number 13” from where the plant was supposedly liberated.

Either way, this plant has accumulated a lot of rumors along the way and today many offer strains that they claim to carry the authentic G13 genes. In reality we have no way to determine whether or not these plants are actually related to the original plant. Regardless of the plants origin, one thing is for sure and that is that there cannot be any pure G13 available in seed form since only a female plant was given to Neville and as far as stories go, it was never selfed into feminized seeds.

Neville's G13 Skunk x Black WidowThere are however three credited sources where the average grower can get a hold of authentic G13 hybrids; one being Sensi Seeds, which was formed by Neville Schoenmaker under a different name and later taken over by Ben Dronkers. The second is the Mr. Nice Seedbank and finally Soma Seeds.

The lineage of this elusive strain is said to be of pure Afghani origin but there is no way of saying for sure what the genetic make up really was. The plant did show strong cannabis indica traits so it remains the most probable and educated guess. Upon acquiring the G13 clone, the Seed Bank proceeded with creating a whole battery of G13 f1-hybrids. Some of the more notable creations were G13 x Ortega, G13 x Hashplant, G13 x Northern Lights #2, G13 x Haze and G13 x Skunk#1. Only the G13 x Hashplant is still available in seed form today and can be considered the closest relative to the original plant.

The G13 Skunk was said to be the best hybrid and Neville brought it to the attention of Shantibaba at Mr. Nice Seedbank when he left the Seedbank. It was then shelved and forgotten about for some time. After working through alarmingly low germination rates of the 20 year old seed, Shantibaba recently crossed the G13 Skunk that he got from Neville to some old school Skunk#1 and his already famous Black Widow, thereby successfully rejuvenating the old genes. By this time the original G13 mother at Sensi Seeds had already lost so much vigor that the plant eventually passed away, along with her pure genes. The G13 Haze found its way into the hands of Soma, a gift from Ed Rosenthal who had previously acquired it from Neville. He has successfully produced several new strains using the glorious G13 G13 x HashplantHaze father that was found among a handful of seeds.

When researching the history of the G13, one cannot but stumble upon a few private cuttings that supposedly derived from the G13 mother acquired by Neville. These include the Airborne G13 cutting, which actually looks more similar to the G13 x Northern Lights #2 hybrid, the So Cal G13, the Louisiana G13 and the Pacific G13 cuttings. Establishing the authenticity of these cuttings is virtually impossible as all we have to rely on is photographic evidence that provides little assurance. If they indeed contain the original G13 genes they are most likely related to one of the F1-hybrids created at the Seed Bank and not the original mother plant.

The dream of acquiring some pure G13 is quickly shattered when all the evidence comes into light. The simple answer is that there is none to be found. This legendary plant lives on only through the various hybrids, all of which can be traced back to Neville Shoenmakers and the Seedbank. The closest relatives that can be found in seed form today are the strains that Sensi Seeds and The Mr Nice Seedbank offer. Whether or not this plant truly deserves all the hype is debatable, certainly there are equally potent indicas to be found available but few with such a famous yet mysterious history

Master Chine, you might want to attribute the source of these "histories" you are posting.

I thought they looked familiar, all but the Chemdog History come from the same seed vendor's site.

Its always the polite thing to do to give credit to the original source or author.

Peace.

master chine likes to have fun and doesn't know about the ic hornet nests. :)

if he was more informed he would probably start with:

1). how some seed vendors actually sourced their genetics.

we might follow that up with:

2). who actually makes the seeds for some of the "only good at marketing hype" seed vendors.

we might follow that up with:

3). how some seed vendors ripped off anyone and everyone for a couple of years and think they can come back into the biz greeted by hugs, kisses, roses and chocolates..

then we could discuss :

4). seed strains that don't perform as advertised and how the vendor explains much later how we need to perform that 1/1000 pheno hunt instead of being upfront about their highly recessive keepers.

then we could discuss:

5) how a lot of vendor's strains have such tolerance build up issues that after the first couple of times smoking their excessively inbred over-hyped "elite crosses" that you can't even get a buzz off their "fire".

now those would be funny strain stories. :)

G`day Masta Chine

There were 9 versions .
#5 is Afghani x Hawaiian .
The higher #s [above #5] were Colombian. Thai ,Mexican and Indian crosses. #1-5 were more Indica crosses .
The NL#5 Nevil released was Nl#5 x Nl #1 .

All the stories about NL #5 having Thai in the mix are off the mark . Hawaiian it was .

And NL #1 has Afghani #1 in it .

Nevil burnt his bridge to the NL source by trying to get seeds from the breeders partners ...

Thanks for sharin

Hi Elmer, there has been a lot of Thai in the islands since the late 60s when the BOEL crew were there, and maybe the myth of the Thai in NL#5 could have referred to a Hawaiianized Thai i.e. Thai x Afghani. I mean that Hawaiian must have been a relatively recent import since according to the literature there was hardly any ganja in the islands before the 60s.
