During the revolutionary war, a new standard was set for the treatment of those who had been detained, displaced, or captured in conflict be they solider, or civilian. Prior to that time, it was basically normal, to treat captured, and displaced personal like hell, and that is using extreme understatement.
George Washington was responsible for the establishment of this new standard, which required that captured
or detained personal be treated with decency and dignity.
It awkward to explain how difficult and expensive it was for a young nation struggling to exist to do this.
It turned out to have been well worth it.
It resulted in a standard for the treatment of such persons that has stood us more than well over the years. As a result of that, we have held a moral high ground that resulted in American personal being treated
considerably better, or more decently than they might otherwise have been.
I find it disgusting to see such tradition abandoned, and do not believe that it shall serve this nation well.
