Hi Gry
I hope you dont mind, I found this quite interesting but I dont know if it fits in your thread
750 million genetically engineered mosquitoes approved for release in Florida Keys
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/08/19/health/gmo-mosquitoes-approved-florida-scn-wellness/index.html

I was checking the numbers used in the trials in Brazil and we are talking about 185.000 mosquitos used.
https://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0003864#sec002
Eclosion and release

Male pupae were aliquoted into release devices (RD) where they eclosed to adults over 24–48 hr before release (for details, see S1 Text). Mosquitoes were dispersed in field site by opening RDs at the rear of a vehicle moving slowly throughout the release area. Releases occurred three times per week. In the initial phase, which we call “rangefinder”, we maintained a constant release rate of males (~ 10,000 per release) for six weeks (total of 185,000 males).

750 million is an impressive number. I doubt any third world country would allow such numbers. I think you should change the thread title "top of the heap to fifth world or maybe sixth world and going down"

Do you really think there will be no environmental consequences? How do you count 750 million mosquitos, do you weigh them???
So the same way we have banana republics, now we will have mosquito republiquettes?
Have a nice weekend and enjoy life while you can

god forbid we turn loose altered males so female mosquitoes lay eggs that will not hatch out. if Florida has any extra left over, i could use them here this summer.

Environmental consequences of the reduction of mosquito numbers *should* be minimal, as the main consequences I see to *high* mosquito populations is increase of disease and reduction of *people*. I question the effectiveness of measures like this, as mosquitos - like anything else, including people - will increase their numbers to the point of collapse if nature (or artifice) provided no restraining factors, and it remains to be seen how this will play out.

I am not favorable to genetic manipulation of wild populations of ANYTHING, as I distrust our sense of entitlement, especially when it comes to generating sweeping effects on the natural world.

Inclined to agree with you with respect to the manipulation.
Am saddened by the energy put in to the genetic manipulation of
the chestnut tree. Had they put a fraction of the energy into rebuilding
the natural stock which remained, as opposed to "demonstrating a novel
concept", we could have a recovered population of natural trees as opposed to lab produced experiments they attempt to put back into the natural environment absent any understanding of what future implications may be.

I’ve heard many versions of that song...every one has been *wonderful*: John Cale, Peter Gabriel, *Bono* even. Sadly, it’s not news that labels are lousy judges of music

What Happens to Your Body When You Stop Eating Sugar

Fighting those cravings is life changing—literally.

https://getpocket.com/explore/item/...ou-stop-eating-sugar?utm_source=pocket-newtab

Silicon Valley is built on blood sugar manipulation.

I remember Peet's second coffee shop in Menlo Park. Like bees to honey !

At my last corporate job, it was fascinating how the 40-somethings kept the appearance going.

The head of security, the office that did security clearances & managed guards, was known for drinking a 12 pack of Tab every day. (admittedly, caffeine, no sugar)

Another older co-worker was heavy into Peanut M&M's, and got heavier & heavier as a result. It was his Afternoon Fix.

I used to use sugar to help me take classes at Lynda.com, which was bought by Linked in Microsoft and is now the lowly Linked in Learning.

Then I had a dental appointment that made it obvious that I needed to give up the afternoon sugar. My habit was chamomile tea & honey at the time. October 28, 2008, a week before Obama won the election.

I went cold turkey. No more afternoon sugar, no more afternoon tech.

Sugar, the ULTIMATE brain food ?

maybe only for those of us that use it as a crutch.

the dentist that helped me in 2008 was a Hindu guy, a very skilled student dentist. Got through dental school with no sugar and no meat.
