Semi-relevant to how fucked up things are. I'd like to share a sad yet hilarious story from an old college buddy.
He grew up lower middle class, just enough money to get no grants for student loans, too white for affirmative action grants but not enough money for his parents to help.
He took the advice from boomers that we all got in high school ("college no matter what!"). We both went for engineering and well, he just wasn't smart enough. Bright kid just couldn't handle the math. He ended up getting a major in English with a good gpa. Authority figures told him he'd be fine (because they were, as boomers)...a degree in anything is enough for middle class corporate management. Well...you can all guess how that turned out. Ten years later, 90k in debt, 15 bucks an hour.
...He just told me he's getting an MBA from some dogshit online school. I said "WHY? That's insane bro, what are you thinking? More debt for boomer cliches about how to show up for work on time and keep a positive attitude?" His explanation made me laugh so hard..
In brief, he's never going to earn enough to pay back the 90k he owes the feds. Deep down he knows that, and he accepted it. Therefore, 90k, 150k, half a million...who gives a shit? What difference does it make? So what he did is he picked some shitty school that allows for federal "living expenses" of 22k a year in federally-backed student loans. He's going to do that for 2 years, keep his day job and buy a new truck with the student loan money lol.
He closed with "...if it doesn't work I'll just teach English in Budapest."
lol. It's obviously shady, and seems a bit insane. But honestly? Fuck this whole system. Tear it down, dollar by dollar. In retrospect, not paying your student loans is one of the most realistic, revolutionary acts we can do. I laughed my ass off and gave him my approval.
