Can't believe I put up with a windows machine for damned near a week before I grabbed the vise grips and extracted the windows debris. Every day was a 100 needless accommodations. No more !

Now it does what, and when I ask to, and don't even to sugar coat it. Every time I go though this, I curse
the years that I spent with the most worthless of operating systems- did have a buddy that hooked me up with some cut down versions that had appeal, which I do keep on the shelf.

I've been doing that for years. I know what almost everything does so I know what I can strip. And it's significant. But you can do other stuff. A good antivirus is one. A bigger hard drive isn't, but a SSD (solid state drive) will make a world of difference. The biggest issue is the internet. Not visiting "bad" websites and being savvy enough to not click on email links, is the best thing you can do.

The complaints we hear about computers are the same complaints we used to hear about cars when they fist came out. "Clutch, breaks, gas, gears, spark..... All I want to do is drive my car!"

It's getting better, but it's slow going. It'll be another 30 years before you can just "use it" without worrying about everything else.

I was lucky: I went from middle-scale proprietary OSs to Unix rather rapidly and I’m the happier for it. Not to say I never worked in a DOS/windows environment, I just never got trapped in it by owning one. When I left the industry 20 years ago, I had choice of Windows, Apple, and Unix; given that no one would pay me to support my own machine, I went with Apple, and I haven’t been sorry. I know they come in for a lot of abuse, that’s nothing new, but I’ve never been dissatisfied with product or service, and I’ve never found more reason to distrust THEM than any other major tech platform/company.

And I should add: considering how far the industry has come since ‘77 when I first went “online”, I don’t think a 30-year learning curve will be necessary.

I had betas and prerelease of the first windows gui, built my own machines for years, ran a bbs with slowest modems. Win.ini, Sys.ini, yeah yeah.... Remember the ol dial up handshake?

Gave up about ten years ago and went to Apple. Never looked back.

It's time for a law making the creation of lists of people and associated attributes illegal and punishable by death. Let companies and political organizations do without. No more public manipulations.

agree absolutely. i still have never read any acceptable rationale for asking what ethnic group you belong to on the census either. if i survive until the next census, i am going to write down "human" under the question "race?"

U.S. Coronavirus Cases Are Rising Sharply, but Deaths Are Still Down

This seemingly counterintuitive trend might not last, experts said. But the nation can still learn from the decline.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/03/health/coronavirus-mortality-testing.html

it very well may have a lower immediate death rate as we learn more about it. that does not lessen my concern over the damage it allegedly does even when you survive- IE blood system, lungs, blood clotting. what will be the long-term effects from this shit?
