Yes, there's a relationship between soil staying too wet for too long and the amount of time it takes for it to 'go bad' on you- the reaction where the lime neutralizes acid from the peat happens in aqueous solution; basically, if your soil is wet all the time you are going to see your pH drop faster, the roots will not be able to uptake nutes also because they need oxygen, and the particle size of your medium will also break down.
It's easy to avoid this- re-pot into pots only SLIGHTLY larger each time, so that you don't end up with whole soil zones that the roots can't access and therefor jsut SIT THERE wet and stagnant when you water.

dude,first off, i've read your posts here on IC for awhile and i can say you aren't stupid, in fact i've even read shit of yours that i thought was pretty smart. BUT... you have this very demeaning attitude that comes across as unnecessarily hostile, and frankly it just don't belong here. and especially it should not be directed at stinkyattic who is by far one of THE most knowledgeable and generous people on IC.

so here is my advice and what i do for writing on message boards....

WE ARE HERE TO GROW POT DIG?!? so that means we are team players at least on the same side....right?! so why don't you divide up your 'personality' and take all your hositility and direct at your favorite group to hate while leaving all the 'good stuff' here at IC. or find some ACTUAL morons on IC and go pick on them or their stupid threads. it doesn't make sense to alienate people who are supposed to be on the same team. and it really doesn't make sense to jerk around stinkyattic. it makes you look small and obtuse.

hey FarmerTed, growing organic is a great way to achieve good results, but it is more complicated and difficult than most consider. chasing ph numbers, ppm's, constantly adjusting, etc. can lead to "chasing your tail" syndrome. an organic soil that doesn't drain well will screw you up big time. growing containers that are too small will play havoc with you.

i would suggest that you do a search on "hempy bucket". it is a system using vermiculite and perlite (50/50). if you want to stay "organic" there are lots of natural nutrients and additives available. his system is dead simple and produces great results for beginners and experts.
