Certain teks, IIRC, were very simple and relied on tubing filling the reservoir once the water level dropped too low, and the air introduced that way had to be purged. Other teks used ballcock valves and valve boxes and you didn't need to worry about it... So it depends on what tek you go with.
It's been almost 20 years since I dabbled in those modifications though, so I don't remember the specifics. Once I found out about the perlite humidification method, the humidifier began collecting dust.
