Tips, Tricks, and Maybe Secrets

That looks really really good. I've been thinking about rain water. A friend of mine saves it for his house plants. If he doesn't have rain water he uses those drops that take the chlorine out of water for fish tanks. Swears by it. I tried a little in a white five gallon bucket. Stirred it around and a few small dark grains appeared in the bottom center after it settled. I tried it more than once to make sure and each time the grains appeared. I've been trying this recently in five gallon buckets. I pour off the bottom 1/2 gallon where the grains are. Not sure if it is working. To impatient right now to do a proper test. Doesn't seem to hurt though.

I noticed your comment on rain water. I loves me some rain water. I am on a well out here (two wells actually) and I use that too.

The one thing that i can say i would rather have then rain water is well water. Thats a wonderful source of natural clean water. As long as there is no coal around. If so the sulphur content is going to be over kill and some major filtering is going to need to be done. One other thing with well water that you want to look out for is the hardness. Always check the PPM's to make sure its in a desired range.

I have never had issues with hard water here. I do want to get a ph meter and ppm (is that whats its called? meter pretty soon though. I will for sure be buying a ph meter in the next couple of days. I guess having both meters would get me that much closer to trying a hydro grow.

A pH meeter is a must. That is something that you want to watch close. In the time that i have been doing this i have never used a PPM meeter.......even in my hydro grows.

Never used a PPM meter huh? Me neither but I am the new guy. I think the proper soil can do as well as hydro but to be honest I am basing that on nothing. I will try hydro later as I develop growing skills. I aint totally dumb to growing. I grow exotic hot peppers and tons of tomato plants every year. I know grass is different but I will do ok.

The best thing about rain water, its free. I have to pay for the electricity for my well to pump well water out.

Glad to hear that, if and when you start to use it id like to follow the thread if you have one. I like seeing my tips in use with others.

I know that Mossy has picked this one up too as well as running a constant source of o2 to the water as it stands and waits to be used.

Dangers of Seedling starting mix

Dangers of Seedling starting mix

Now at first glance you may think that this is being directed at actually starting seeds, yet something different all together.

I have recently started a cup challenge in which all the growers are to start and finish at least one plant in a 16oz party cup. With that said this is where my problem soon came to face. Currently i have one female entry into the contest and it appears that she is going to make me work for her yield.

I started all six in the same conditions jiffy pellet then to the party cup in a lightly pre made mix of seed starting mix. The pre made part was of me by adding some epsom salt, blood meal, bone meal, my secret source of macro nutes, and seaweed kelp to bring the mix alive. All plants were in this mix and doing fantastic then i started to see a problem arise. Spotted leaves are not a good thing. I started to notice the early stages of a pH issue with the slight discoloration of the center of the leaf where the spots began to form. I made a move fast, 4 of the 6 that i had started and wanted to run through the contest all started showing this problem. i moved 4 of them to larger pots as to not loose the crop as well as correct the issue. But i still wanted to learn what the issue was so i left a female in the situation as well as to stay in the competition.

I knew that my pH was on spot at 6.0 as it always is but there was one thing that i was not doing out of pure laziness. I was not checking the runoff pH as i normally do. So i began doing so to see that i was running way way way to acidic. Somewhere in the high 5 range. I was not running nutes at the time and the feed water was just that water and pH correct. Then it hit me. The peat in the mix was breaking down.

Long story short....As the peat breaks down over time it begins to drop the pH level of the soil. It can make it rather acidic. It all began to make sense as the other 4 plants have completely ridded themselves of the issue. You can still see some of the damage on the young leaves as slight discoloration but all new growth is fantastic and beautiful. The last female is in the cup still and is recovering from the issue as we speak. Her new growth is looking great. I had to compensate the difference that the soil was making in the feed water. The good thing about it all is that it hasnt put any stop on the growth. One set of pistils yesterday......about 5 or 6 new spots today :)

So if you use peat in any of your mixes keep this in mind as it could happen to you.......
