#1 Odor control. BUY a carbon scrubber and a fan. Don't risk your freedom with some Rube Goldburg homemade bullshit.
reading is super important, but so is failure. Be prepared to fail and don't get down on yourself for failing. Lots of methods work well, lots of nutrients work well. Lots of mediums and lots of lights work well, but get in to it simple. Start basic and work up. The biggest problem I ran in to was patience. I still run in to it at times. Get the room setup and running efficiently prior to planting the mj. If you have some tomato or pepper seeds lying around, start with those and get the room dialed in first. Just take it slow and learn why you are doing each step. Learn how each step is the building block of another and short cuts will not work. Just be patient brother and it will be one of the most rewarding things you can do. Best wishes.
P.S. i began with ebb & flow, switched to waterfarms and eventually switched to hempy buckets and life is GOOD. The less moving parts you have, the easier it is to maintain.

For the same reason a beginning aquarist should start with a goldfish bowl rather than a saltwater reef tank or, a motorcyclist starts on a Vespa and not a Goldwing or, a baby crawls before it runs.
Start simple, work your way up.
Always wear your socks in the rain and don't forget to buffer your potting-soil with dolomitic lime.

But, absolutely get a scrubber. Smelling is worse than telling, it's advertising

+1 for calibrating your meters. I am also a fan of using GH liquid ph test for a second opinion. It is cheap and will let you know when your meter is out of whack.

Other than that, K.I.S.S. (aka Keep It Simple, Stupid) The best thing to do to your plants is ... nothing. They know what to do. They have 20,000 years of genetic experience to guide them. Best thing to do is keep our hands to ourselves.
I've read this at least a hundred times and yet I have to sit on my hands to keep from 'helping' the lil Jackies to shed their hulls. I made a deal with myself that if they get to 3" tall and they still have it, I'll take it off.
Nobody bothers to help their carrots and squash.

Check your rez daily.
Change your rez. Do not be cheap here
Put your system together and WATCH it cycle. (just the bottom pots)
Pick a nice simple A & B nute. Pura Vida more organic to Ionic not so much. Don't let the store dude sell u a shelf of supp's inhanchersbloomers n blasters. Wait till you are comphey then inhance.
Cut your lines between buckets long enough to dump 1 bucket into another. Helps with cleanin.

Always remember water FLOWS downhill everytime.
U can siphon out a rez through your pots. Some systems hav a elbow with a hole just to stop this. Make sur u put it in the right line
-U will hav wet floors plan now.
I put drains in my rez's. That might be more of an inhancement. Took me 30 years to do it.
