Thrips :Aka: Bastards from hell

Thrips

Thrips will wreak havoc like mites, but they will destroy your crop initially quicker than mites, but if you let mites go, they’ll do the same, and are a tad harder to get rid of. But back to the thrips, they are from hell when it comes to cannabis, and I found several of my plants that have come down with a virus from where those little critters were feeding. The virus looks like little round spots all over the leaves of the plant, slowly killing off the leafs, and spreading all over the plant. [insert1]

I found most things pretty useless for thrips, those products being, pestout, bug buster, Gognat, and concern insect soap. I should note, the plants were sprayed about 2 weeks ago with floramite, works great for spider mites, but obviously the thrips ate it up. What did work, Pyrethrum TR and before applying it, they all got coverage from neem oil mixed with pestout. Then 1 week later, one more dose of the Pyrethrum TR. Thrips are also hard to spot, very tiny, the ones I had were a pale shell white, they’re pretty quick, again real tiny, how to describe them, they look like a microscopic maggots, and then when they move, you say damn they got legs, lol. But once you turn them on their side, you realize they kind of remind you of a microscopic cricket. But don’t be fooled by their small size, they will wreak havoc quickly.

I was simply amazed at how quickly those little bastards can cause all sorts of problems. The first clue is that on some of the leafs, there was like silver scrapes, and discoloration, and some spotty marks like what mites make. I treated right away but to no avail. But then after using the Pyrethrum TR, it broke up the outbreak, even though it was a small one, since I never saw too many of them, but all it takes is a few, but the cycle was still there, so used once more a week later also with the mix I made for the sprayer. I should note, they affected 80% of my plants, and that’s with a small outbreak, and acting quickly on it. It makes me think, and I thought the borg were bad ass, I think these things got them beat.;)

>>>Will post the pics later.

Beneficial nematodes are what a guy needs to deal with them at the grow medium level. They pupate up to 8 inches down into the medium. Dealing with them on the leaves alone only solves the problem temporarily.

Kr@kEn, I agree,
As for the ones in the soil, I did mix 2 TSP of Gognats for every gallon of water, and used it twice in the watering regiment, but I can’t say that it works or not. It had no bad side effects on the plants. But haven’t noticed any new signs for a week so far, but am still keeping an eye out, as these critters would be hell if their numbers got out of control.

Imnotcrazy, thanks, I’ll have to remember that when they return again, was just looking up at the sticky on that, great info.

Stitch, always good hearing from you, I don’t know if I’ll post anymore on it, since there’s a really great thread already up there. But when I saw the damage they can do for so little numbers, they gained my respect quickly. Never had a problem with them before, usually just the mites, gnats, or whiteflies. The gnats don’t really bother to much, and they seem to always be around somewhat, but in low numbers for the grow size, so they’re tolerated somewhat compared to the others. Haven’t had a breakout of whiteflies for a few years now, so there’s some good news.

those little ****ers almost killed over 100 plants under 10,000 watts in just a few days for me. i finally wiped them out with pyrethrum bombs, i didnt really have any other choice due to the critical situation combined with such a large canopy.

I fought them for about a month in my garden. I used Spinosad which worked well if you make sure to repeat uses and spray thoroughly.

Although I didnt want to spray my flowers with Spinosad, so they kept coming back.

How I finally got rid of them. I harvested, cleaned both rooms very well sprayed with Spinosad again and used Hot Shot No Pest Strips. Put 1 Strip in each room. Im gonna warn you these strips put off harmful vapors. I hated even going in the room because of the vapors. Although I used them for about 3 weeks, and any bug that was in or entered the room died.

No more thrips now, so I sealed the No Pest Strips in a couple baggies and put them away for later use.

I dare bugs to come into my room now lol, dont make me pulll out the No Pest Strips :muahaha:

I think these are my little prob too. I bug bomb in between grows and einstein oil until two weeks into flowering. Got any pics of these suckers? I def think its these now that I see ur pics of damage. Colder temps have helped me almost see none on y ladies in the flower room. The vegies tho have them again but i killed most for now. I gota look into these nematodes for all out soil wars. Sucks but I can keep them at bay for good results.

I agree with the two other responses that Spinosad will knockout Thrips in 2 treatments.

Peace...

I was recently given cuts with thrips. I'm able to be near my garden all day so I foliar fed my plants like every 15-30 minutes with a light solution of maxicrop and leonardite. I also kept my temps around 75degrees F. I think the low temps and being sprayed made em take a hike cause there aren't anymore thrips in my garden. I've done this before with the same results.

Thrips like heat,dry heat......Temps over 85 degrees FH,even with Co2,brings the little
bastards out in force.I tried every single thing for 3 years with no success at all.

I tried soaps, sprays, bombs, stickytraps, nemotodes, ladybugs, totally sterilized the grow
area,A few times also...They just kept coming back. Then Awhile back,I read the thread
here at Icmag about Spinosad.....So I bought some Monterey Garden Insect Spray,
which has Spinosad in it.....Sprayed the Clones, and the Topsoil,on two different occasions, that was it.....There Gone!

GOOGLE IT,ON YOUR COMPUTER.......MONTEREY GARDEN INSECT SPRAY.

It comes concentrated, but if you buy enough of it,i am sure they will ship it to
europe.Let me know if you can't find the site.If you can't I wil try to find my old
invoice or I will re-google it.....later bro.

What causes thrips to appear???I think mine come in through the vents every spring.
I am not worried anymore,This shit kills them good, especially when you hit the top soil
as well. You might have accidently brought a few in on your clothes from the outside,
thats all it takes, those little fukers multiply fast.I went from having a small issue to
a complete infestation within 3 weeks. It got to the point where the little fukers were
biting me.In my opinion the worst pest to have bar none, including spider mites.

I know how spider mites started in my grow. In the hospital plant caretaker screwed up ventilation causing heat stress which made all nice for infestation. Do thrips favor stressed plants?
