I always have trouble with varmints. A neighbor feeds squirrels so the pesky devils are always digging holes in my garden to bury their peanuts. I put cheap mothballs at the edge of the garden to drive off varmints and the birds move them about 3 feet and then spit them out. LOL the life of a pot farmer.
Would you consider autos? They are pretty good now, and you should have enough summer to finish them. You would at least have a crop.
