Space technology is fun in movies but in real life the common man will never benefit from it.
Uh.... The weather predictions you reference to plan your day are derived from orbiting weather satellites. The weather report you watched was probably transmitted to you through orbiting communication satellites. The GPS unit in your car and in the aircraft you travel in and which transport the goods you purchase depend upon orbiting satellites. Our entire technological society is totally dependent upon space technology. The idea that there is an "either-or" choice we must make between space exploration and dealing with our problems on Earth is a falsehood. We can do both at the same time.
The robotic-artificial intelligence revolution will radically transform human societies. This trend is now starting to reach into information based white collar positions. This is going to exaggerate the current trend of growing inequality between the "have's" and the "have nots". And a huge proportion of humanity will find themselves shuffled into the category of "have not".
Henry Ford had the sense to realize that if he didn't pay his workers enough wages, there wouldn't be anybody to buy his automobiles. But what about the case of robots manufacturing self driving trucks? Masses of out of work people means extreme social instability. You can say that you have "your's" because of your smarts and initiative, and that those others are just losers. But things have a habit of getting out of hand in these situations.
