This may disappoint some of you but.......

driving down the highway tonight I was nearly killed. Me & Hank were on our way to Bemidji in a snow storm, not a lot of snow but it was wind blown and no lines were visible on the snow slick highway. Suddenly on a long sweeping bend in the road some idiot drifted into my lane and stayed there, my tires were running over the rumble strips on the right shoulder as the full size Chevy SUV was bearing down on us, I couldn't make any sudden movements or I would have lost control and either hit him or been thrown into the ditch. We were both doing 50+ mph and the accident would have been spectacular, had I stayed in my lane we would have hit head on, we passed within inches of each other, I was left w/that coppery taste of adrenalin in my mouth.

I was fortunate enough to realize he was in my lane well before we passed and moving slightly & slowly to the right saved us all, including Scooby & Alice who were riding along tonight. Hitting the brakes would have caused me to lose control as well and so was not an option.

I'm a member of the Million Mile Club and I've had my share of close calls over the years, usually I've got enough control in the situation to avoid any accidents or to minimize the outcome, in this case however someone was looking out for us.

There were two cars behind me about 1/2 mile back, I was sure he was going to take them out but somehow they managed to pass safely. Maybe the driver was drunk, maybe texting or maybe just a fucking idiot on the wrong side of the road not paying attention.

Either way I'm gonna be here for awhile longer, like I said, sorry to let some of you down....... :moon:

As if record breaking cold temps aren't enough SHIT to be dealing with....

Hopefully that's your "bad luck" experience for this winter. Probably some douche on a cell phone.

thnx for the kind thoughts you guys, I hope none of you ever find yourself in a similar situation; a close call is one thing but having near zero ability to respond w/out losing control is another. I'm extremely lucky I was able to tell he was in my lane at all, really crazy shit.

I do know that feeling...this happened when I was about 17 years old or so, still hadn't learned everything about being a smart driver. I was driving on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, NY, and it had one lane going north, and one going south, undivided. At this part of the road I was heading south and was positioned at the top of a down grade which then leveled off to flat, down grade being maybe 300 to 400 yards in length before flattening out. This was all straight, no curves.

I was behind a slow moving car at this top point, had a broken yellow line indicating it was legal for me to pass, so I started to pass the car. Well, this car I was passing started speeding up as is so often the case when you pass somebody. Anyway, I put my foot on the gas a bit more, at this point I'm exactly side by side with this car, and about halfway into the down grade. Right then, and I knew my mistake immediately, I noticed a car that was pulling out of a driveway, on my side of the road, and it's going to go north, which would put it right in my lane.

There wasn't a huge reason for that car to check for traffic in my direction, it really only had to make sure nobody else was approaching from the south... unless of course somebody was doing what I was doing and passing a car using the north bound lane. I was probably doing 60 mph at that point, and I had no way of pulling out of the lane due to being side by side with the car I was passing. Holy shit, I knew that I was now at the mercy of fate or whatever, I'm guessing that's exactly what your were feeling S4L.

Thankfully, that car pulling out into the north bound lane noticed me at the last second and pulled their car hard off onto the shoulder. I squeezed by with probably a foot or so on either side of me. Glad that kinda shit doesn't happen every day. :)

You kept your cool. The adrenilin flo afterward is an interesting sensation.

Many who lost it kept telling themselves "this is not happening". You are
an exception. You acknowledged what your senses were telling you.

Kudos to you on that narrow escape. It may actually change your life.

I'm sure you sense that, lol.

Guess who it was, ..scooperman..

I was visiting my aunt just outside Harrisburg and saw you.

Next time I'll run you into the SkuKILL river instead of a pole!

Lx

I manage to get it off pole and jump on buckled hood. I then placed collapsible water container pouring into radiator. made it 3 miles or so back home and sold it for 300$. just what I got it off a friend in florida for a year earlier. then I got paid to fix it for new owner. next day starter died wasn't my problem . heard it got shot up with gunholes and then crushed. lex i then took a greyhound cause I was really high and went to Harrisburg and screwed your aunt.i made her swallow as I aint gonna contribute to your family gene pool.BTW she told me some family secrets . seems you wet the bed till you were 25 and you like to wear her stuff and dance around singing Madonna songs . like a virgin I was told was your favorite.

Glad everyone made it out safely...

I'm a repeat offender of the million mile club...50+ in white out conditions?

Stop driving like an asshole.

I have to say I haven't drove in heavy snow for many of years. I dont miss it. Always seem to be more accident the first time you get snow on the road or extremely bad ice. Its a skill driving in shitty conditions. worse when people dont learn this skill and still go out on the road.

hey! who the fuck said anything about whiteout conditions???

I said it was a light snow, windblown and obscuring the lines on the highway, that is NOT a whiteout!!!

I also said that I could see far enough ahead to tell that he was on my side of the road, again NOT a whiteout.

What I didn't mention was that I was passed by several other cars along the way in the 60mph zone we were driving in, and when they passed me they were doing well over 60mph, ya know why??? Because it WASN'T a whiteout.

wanna read between the lines and act like somebody's mama???

then go do it in another thread 'cuz I'm not buying.......

oh yeah, same to you Walt!!! :moon:

btw! it was the other guy driving like an asshole, I coulda been doing 30mph and still been killed by that dumb fuck if he was another foot over into my lane.

both of you, please warn me if you're ever coming to northern minnesota, I'd like to avoid sharing the road with you.
