Helmet saves man when truck runs over his head
POSTED: 5:06 p.m. EDT, May 15, 2007

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Ryan Lipscomb lived to tell how it felt to have a truck run over his head. "Really strange," he said.

Lipscomb, 26 of Seattle, suffered a concussion but was otherwise unhurt. He was shaken up, especially after he saw his mangled helmet.

Lipscomb, a graduate student in medical physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was riding down a bike path in Madison on Friday afternoon. As he approached an intersection, he said, he noticed the oncoming delivery truck preparing to make a right turn in front of him.

The truck wasn't going to stop, Lipscomb said, so he slammed on his brakes, flipping his bike and landing in the street.

A moment later the truck rolled over his head.

"I didn't see it coming, but I sure felt it roll over my head," he told The Capital Times newspaper. "It feels really strange to have a truck run over your head."

His black helmet was flattened, tread marks visible on the cracked frame.

Lipscomb was taken to a hospital and released about three hours later.

Police initially declined to call the incident a hit-and-run, saying it was unclear whether the driver knew someone had been hit. But Sgt. Bernie Gonzalez later updated the accident report to include the designation.

Police spokesman Mike Hanson said Tuesday there hasn't been an arrest because investigators haven't been able to identity the driver.

In a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, Lipscomb said he has had some lingering headaches and a stiff neck.

"All things considered, that's about as good as it can get," he said.

Despite the close call, he said, he has to focus on school because his qualifying exam for the Ph.D. program is next week.

"I think it will probably hit me when I'm done with exams," Lipscomb said.

Lipscomb does plan to ride again, he just prefers to wait until after exams are over.

"After that, I'll go out and get a new helmet and be back on my bike," he said.

:yoinks:
You don't get much luckier than that!!

wow must have been really lucky that the helmet didn't collapse and crush his head or the trucks wheels didn't go over his chest or neck instead which would have obviously killed him.

also if a truck runs over you woudn't it have to run over his head twice, once the front wheels then the back. when the front wheels hit the helmet I would think the force would move his body and neck thus the rear wheels most likey wouldn't run over his helmust perfectly.

guess it's one of those really really really lucky instances.

I was just saying the other day, If you are dumb enough not to wear a helmet, you probably won't be missing much when you bang your head. This guy was wearing a helmet and getting his PHD.

LMFAO HAHA hA h Ah Ha ah HaHa HaHah H AhHAhAh A :bat:

Holy shit, I want one of those helmets! A delivery truck can run over your head and you come out unscathed? Fuckin A. But how did the helmet become flattened and he didn't sustain any head injuries?

Oh and around here, cops don't care if you "didn't know it was a hit and run". Your ass is goin' to jail, guy.

ALWAYS wear a helmet if you're going to ride a bike, please. One friend of mine died last year from head injuries due to not wearing a helmet and wrecking. Another sustained some mild head trauma just recently from swerving to miss a deer and wrecking, no helmet.

yeah I wear a helmet and its very crowded on the cycling paths. had a few close calls but not with a truck. Many times people in cars are too courteous in giving way. I just want to hold onto to the traffic light and get my breath but everyone is giving way and stopped so you have to go. But then you get onto the roads and its everyone for themselves... I prefer going out of town

Luck guy. But let me see if I got this straight.
He was on a bike path that intersected a street and was planning to cross said intersection when he noticed a truck coming. The truck wasn't going to stop, so he did?? He did not plan on stopping before he crossed the street anyway??? Kinda stupid if you ask me. Helmet or no. And he jammed on the brakes, causing him to flip over the handle bars?? You couldn't skid your bike? If a truck is barreling down the street not intending to stop, I know I sure as hell would not jam on the brakes in a way that would send me over the bars. Hell, jump off and let that shit ghost ride into the street and watch the spectacular death of your bike. Might get kinda scraped up, but it is better than having ohh, your head run over.

Shit, my friend used to run over our Pro-tec skateboard helmets all the time in his Bronco. Just to see if they could take it, and they did. Probably 20 times has mine been run over, and no cracks or anything. I ain't stickin my head in though....
