I was at home depot today and bought a thermostat...I was wondering if anyone has used it with there fans...I have a 6" vortex...I want it to control the fan, thanks...

here';s a link to the thermostat..http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDU...ID=ccgiaddhjgmdfkhcgelceffdfgidglm.0&MID=9876

"If you are looking for a simple to use thermostat yet want the accuracy of digital technology take a look at this unit. It has a good size display that is easy to read. The unit is simple to operate. Just set to heat or cool and use the up or down arrows to set the desired comfort level (temperature). With other features like calibration to allow you to adjust the room temperature to an existing thermometer, large temperature operation range of 35 to 90 degrees, plus an attractive price. This unit is a great choice. Works with most milivolt to 24 volt heating and cooling system.

• Universal Replacement including standard heating and cooling (millivolt to 24 Volt), 2 wire boiler

You will need a 24v transformer and a fan relay to run that one. You can pick both parts up for cheap at your local a/c supply store. I'm to lazy to do a inet search for ya. PM me with any other q's.....

That's the fan relay ya need right there. One side of the four terminals is for your fan (120v) the other is the contactor that runs inline off your 24v transformer. You can do ALOT when you purchase the transformer (flip flops, humidity controls.....ect.)

what's the best one to get then? they have one that is 16.99 that has 2 wires that you splice into...might get that one...it's for attic fans...

You need a four terminal one with a high enough amp rating for your fan. I'd suggest using one designed for replacement of indoor A/C fan relays as thats the road your going down. You are basically making your own a/c unit minus the cooling/heating equipment.

Off this one page you can purchast the relay and the transformer although they are quite expensive.... you can find them cheaper elsewhere.

You can also use the 30A contactor on that page if you would like.....its a bit cheaper and alot more heave duty.

That one will work as well but i thought you already bought the other t-stat?? That is why i suggested the relay/transformer. By the way.....digitals are WAY more accurate.

Also....just for reference for anyone else who wants to do this. Make sure you buy the correct voltage transformer for the application. If you are running 110v.....purchase the 110v transformer. If you have 220v....i'd purchase the 220v one.

well...i did buy the other one...but I can always just install that one for my house, since I have an old POS anyways...so it wouldn't be a waste...I went ahead and bought that other one too...so now I have both...I think I am going to use the blue one for my cab, but...it only has 2 wires, my fan has 3...what do i do? I don't really need it to be accurate to the *, just whenever it gets to "blank" degrees fan goes off...so that I will set it to 70* so the fan is always on during light cycle because it never falls below that, and then at night it will shutoff periodically, just what i want...

It needs to be inline with your hot leg (110v power) that goes to the fan. You need to disconnect the wire that comes from your fan and connect it to one side of the wire to the t-stat. You then connect the hot leg from your house to the other wire of the t-stat. Easy peasy. The other two wires of your fan are the neutral and ground and not applicable here. I'd suggest reading the panflet that comes with the t-stat because i maybe wrong (not likely).

there is a place on the inside to screw in the ground wire...but I can't tell which wire is black or which is white...hrmmmmm....I am scared to cut my vortex wire...

How is your fan hooked up?? Did it come with a cord or did you have to make your own and attach it? You will need a multi meter to do this.

Killa,

What you need to do is "splice" that thermo into the "hot" or "live" wire coming out of the wall. It'll go: wall outlet hot wire//one wire of thermo//second wire on thermo//hot wire (that runs the fan). When you're done, you'll have one continuous hot lead running from the wall through the thermo to the fan. Leave the common (white) wires alone.

damn...im so confused...I thought I would be able to just splice the fan wires...I have to take off my outlet and fuck with shit? That's a little to serious for me...I lost when you guys say "hot" "live...and that stuff... :( maybe a picture would help...

also...how is this thing gonna be powerd...if i can't plug it in?
