No coco ... soil, perlite, vermiculite 7/3/1 8/5/2 can't remember exactly when I mixed it -- very airy though, that's what allows bottom feeding and gas exchange.
As for moms, I have another container that's on 24/0 that has the moms and clones in it ... do a search for "bonsai" and you'll find a couple good articles, one is by DrBudGreenGenes and the other is a repost of an OG thread by oldtimer1 ... that's pretty much what I do.
I don't keep them around forever either, I'm on my second set of White Rhinos ... I picked a couple nice clones, turned them into moms and flowered the original moms in my bigger SOG (20oz containers). Genetics are the same, just rejuvenating the moms that way.
Not really, a little bit of paint smell when I first turned the cab on, but no melting plastic smell. I did worry about heat a little when I put 8 in there only an inch from the lid when closed, but while it gets warm, it's nowhere near enough to melt. They're all 23W bulbs and heat is spread over 8 points so it's manageable.
Yes, perpetual, three in, three out every week ... that said, the cabinet isn't fully loaded yet. First harvest is about 3 weeks out now. I've screwed that up a bit by mixing strains (C99 is a 7-8 week strain and White Rhino is a 9 week strain) so the population might fluctuate a bit depending on what I put in and when.
As for harvest, I'll just have to wait and see. I'd like to see 7-10g dry per plant. Math gets hinky with perpetual SOGs ... Once the cabinet is mature, the longer it runs the closer you approach gpw max ... many people forget about the front load no-yield time though. Suffice to say if it really does through off 10g/plant it will be well over 1gpw adjusted for a 9 week harvest period.
This grow is awesome. I've been wanting to try this in a pc case. I think w cfl7gs is possible. there is a sog under 800w cfl grown in coco in the epic micro grow thread. He vegs then chops them down to height and puts them into flowering. He has great results. Whats your mother chamber look like? Updates? Also search greensmoke sog he has a crazy super cropping technic that lets him grow with only 15 inches of head space.
Thanks for the thread pointers UG! I'll definitely check those out. Both interesting ideas ... I'd guess the veg & chop is to get a fully developed root system before sending into flower. Might try that as I have more clones than I could possibly use any time soon at the moment -- I could take a few of each and let them veg for a month at this point!
I'll also look at the supercrop one, I have tons of leaf scorch now and while I've super cropped many of them they still grow more!
Rest of life is pretty busy this week, prob won't get much of an update done till the weekend. I do have 3 more girls going in tomorrow and the first batch in are due to be pulled in about 3 weeks now.
UG: Mom & clones are in an identical tub, but only a single 42W 6700k CFL in it. Moms are on one side of the cab, then there are 2 perlite/vermiculite tupperware containers on the other side (can get 20 or so clones in each), then rooted clones in small cups sit on top of the clone chambers closer to the light till ready.
Moms are kept small and are cycled every 120 days or so; find a good clone, let it root, then flower the mom and cycle in the good clone as new mom.
SP: About 10 days till I pull the first batch. I'll do an update over the weekend with some photos. The first 5 are really putting on weight and are quite frosty now. Amazing little plants!
Ahhhh, great things come in small packages....a Fiat in a blue canister!! Brilliant idea and pics! When I did Cindy 99's a few summers ago....they grew huge!! Just goes to show you how you can limit size by container.
Here's the cab this morning. 2 sets of 5 plants and 6 sets of 3 ... 28 plants total in the cabinet, another 3 go in and starting after that it will be in and out ... cabinet will be 'mature' and cycling.
Here's the first group that were placed in the cabinet, they have about 10 days till harvest now. They were topped before going in and each have multiple stems... they are very top heavy at this point and can't stand unless balanced properly.
Here's on plant hand-held for a different kind of scale.
And finally a close up bud shot.
The longer the cabinet goes the more I wish it were about 6" taller, not giving up on it, but find myself having to be more hands on with the plants than I'd like to be, maybe i'll yet find the sweet spot for getting them to stay just under the lights!
I'm gonna let it go and see what happens ... I'm betting this will throw off 1/2 ounce or better per week ... pretty good for tiny cups, 264W of CFL and a couple square feet
Boy how time flies ... seems like just yesterday that I started this! Anyway, took the first set of 5 out of the cab to sit in the dark for a couple days before chopping them.
They are by far the best looking plants in the cabinet right now .... they stayed short, filled nicely, can't stand up without taking 'balance' into account.
From here out the plants are more rag tag ... lots of super cropping to control height, some stretch issues, leaf scortch ... Ugh. I like the concept, but will need to rework (read build new) the cabinet with a bit more height to continue on with this long term.
Without further adieu ...
Here's the cabinet at capacity, before pulling the first set:
Here's a group photo of the first round for harvest -- heading to darkness and a chop Thursday or Friday:
