The use of our planet is no longer sustainable

“….the worst thing that will probably happen – in fact is already well
underway – is not energy depletion, economic collapse, conventional
war, or even the expansion of totalitarian governments. As terrible as
these catastrophes would be for us, they can be repaired within a few
generations.

The process now ongoing that will take millions of years to correct is
the loss of genetic and species diversity by the destruction of natural
habitats. This is the folly our descendants are least likely to forgive us.”

So so true...

There is nothing wrong with not smoking pot of coarse but its not fair to say smoking it make you dumb. can you show me any evidence it does? The world is not ending this has all happened before about 1500 years ago with the fall of Rome.

"Why did Rome Fall?

There are adherents to single factors, but more people think a combination of such factors as Christianity, decadence, Pollution, monetary trouble, and military problems caused the Fall of Rome. Governmental incompetence and chance could be added to the list. Even the rise of Islam is proposed as a reason for Rome's fall."Alfred P. Dorjahn and Lester K. Born. The Classical Journal, Vol. 30, No. 3 (Dec., 1934), pp. 148-158. Sounds just like today huh?

We can try to restore balance or let another 1000 years of darkness fall upon the world. The laws of physics are unbend-able.

I have smoked my fair share of pot. Probably for about 20 years each and every day.
I don't think pot makes people dumb. But when high, it sure makes you dream. You know, like the earth id dying and all that other nonsense.

I smoke maybe 3 to 5 times a year anymore. Just can't find the time anymore.

Earth is certainly not going to die anytime soon. Even a massive asteroid strike is not going to destroy the earth. Even if the moon somehow crashed into the planet, it would not destroy the earth.

However, some people are concerned that HUMANS as a species might not survive much longer unless we start to radically re-think some of our precious ideas about our place in the scheme of things.

This planet cannot possibly supply the raw materials to feed, clothe and house 10 billion people for very long. Not to mention supply each of them with seven 70" flatscreen tvs.

If you'd like to argue that it CAN, please do so with FACTS instead of with your condescension and arrogance.

I saw on the discovery channel, I believe it was, that the Earth probably had about 6-9 billion years left in her before the heliosphere shut down and it turned into a big rock. I'm not convinced that we are going to go extinct as a species anytime soon.

To believe that there isn't going to be a mass extinction event sometime in the future, who knows when :dunno:, is silly. The human species was almost wiped out 73,000 years ago by the Toba SuperVolcanoe Eruption. Some speculate about as little as 10,000 survived. There is quite the array of shit that can happen.

We'll see if ourselves is one of those reasons? I don't think so personally. Trying to read through all the propaganda flying around today is difficult at best. A little truth from the top would help clear things up a good deal. They could stop trying to kill us with their poison food, Pharma Drugs, and Wars (both economic and physical) first. That would be nice start.

But no matter what, I reckon a few will survive every mass Mother Nature Spring Cleaning and repopulate to start the party all over again.

Lol the point is not the threat of extinction, its human dignity..

If you think its undignified to dig in the dirt, what the fuck are you doing on a cannabis forum? We are all dirt diggers and tree lovers in here..

You should stop seeing the world on TV and go and see it from a mountain top instead like my man bombadil... much better view

I completely agree with you here. It's not the end of the world or even the end of humanity but within the next 50 years there is going to be great suffering due to starvation and sickness. Unless we work to de-globalize the economy because global resources are drying up.

There are 2 countries I know of that do not have access to global resources due to US policy North Korea and Cuba. North Korea decided to centralize and consolidate their limited resources. The people there suffer from hunger, thirst, and disease. Cuba decided to let each village keep their own resources and trade amongst each other. Cubans have plenty of food and water to go around and sanitation and disease is not a problem without big factories and packed cities.

If America keeps going on the way it is we will end up just like North Korea nothing but guns, nukes, pavement, and a suffering population. I do not want my children to grow up in a world like that.

'World needs a barometer of life'

The world needs a "barometer of life" to prevent ecosystems and species being lost forever, scientists have warned.

Existing schemes, they said, did not include enough species from groups such as fungi and invertebrates to provide a detailed picture of what is at risk.

Writing in the journal Science, the researchers said the barometer would increase the number of species being assessed from almost 48,000 to 160,000.

The data would help identify areas in need of urgent action, they added.

The article was penned by four leading figures in conservation, including Harvard University's Edward O Wilson and Simon Stuart, chairman of the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC).

"Knowledge about species and extinction rates remains very poor, and species disappear before we know they existed," they wrote.

The biodiversity challenge

We are facing a serious crisis in biodiversity, the variety of animals, plants, their habitats and their genes. We humans are part of this biological diversity and depend on it in many ways. The rate that animal and plant species are becoming extinct, and the pace at which ecosystems are being destroyed, are increasing every day.

Biodiversity is the foundation of life on Earth. It underpins the functioning of ecosystems from which we derive essential products and services (known as ecosystem goods and services) such as oxygen, food, fresh water and medicines. Healthy biodiversity is essential to human wellbeing, sustainable development, and poverty reduction. But people, particularly in the developed world, have become so far removed from nature that we have forgotten how much we rely on it.

The escalating rate of species extinction, which is up to 1,000 times the ‘background’ or natural rate, shows that the natural world cannot support the pressure that humanity is placing on it. Biodiversity is being lost through habitat destruction, land conversion for agriculture and development, climate change, pollution, the spread of invasive species and a host of other threats.

Some facts
17,291 species out of 47,677 so far assessed are threatened with extinction.

Of the world’s 5,490 mammals,
79 are Extinct or Extinct in the Wild,
with 188 Critically Endangered,
449 Endangered and 505 Vulnerable.

1,895 of the planet’s 6,285 amphibians are in danger of extinction,
making them the most threatened group of species known to date.

More than 70,000 plant species are used in traditional and modern medicine.

Coral reefs provide food, storm protection, jobs, recreation and other income sources for more than 500 million people worldwide yet 70% of coral reefs are threatened or destroyed.

Biodiversity is essential to global food security and nutrition and also serves as a safety net to poor households during times of crisis.

Diversity of genes within species, e.g. as represented by livestock breeds or strains of plants, is also important for agriculture and food security. Increased diversity reduces risk from diseases and increases our potential to adapt to changing climate.
