Maybe it's just me but every photo I see of Lincoln, he looks like a fucking scrapper man. Just looks like the kind of dude who'd roll you without a second thought if you crossed him in an ally after a few beers. I think the US needs more presidents like that.
i agree about Lincoln. if that is a true quote by Lee, then a hell of a lot of folks calling for his statues to come down "might" want to re-think that position. everything i have ever read about the man made me respect him. a large % of land owners had slaves. i have never read an account of how his were treated. i know his wife freed those she owned, and Lee advocated for their eventual release, but not all en masse which he thought would be a mistake. contrast the demand for Lees' statues to be removed with the Tennessee legislators (as yet) refusal to remove one of confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest. Lee, by nearly all accounts, was a good person (excluding his ownership of slaves) highly educated & an incredible military leader who earned the respect even of those he fought against. Forrest was noted during the Civil War and afterwards for 2 things historically noteworthy -1- he had his troops massacre (by many accounts) over 200 black union troops AFTER the Fort Pillow garrison had surrendered. and -2-he founded the KKK. which are you prouder of? your replies will tell me all i need to know...
