Day 28 - 12/12

Can't believe I made it the whole week without updating, that was hard! Let's get the obligatory pure pics out of the way first of all:

Yeah, I know. Now onto the real grow:

I've been battling really high humidity through this. After the last update a whole heap of lower leaves went weird and died off on all 3 plants. I started noticing these weird white specks on the coco of the pure, which I had when I got attacked by some kind of mite or bug in an old grow. Plus there were things crawling around in the pure's coco as well, something else. I could instantly tell things just weren't right.

Anyway, I finally got a moisture absorber pack, plus I put a second fan to blow around under the canopy and directly on the pure, plus added a light down low, hitting the Pure and the edge buds of the screen, and flushed - between all of this, it fixed all my problems almost overnight. Solid improvement every day since. I think I'm good to go with NO chems used. There is just so much natural pest resistance simply by having a healthy plant in the first place imo. Coco makes it so easy.

I gave the shivas a rather heavy dose of a generic PK boost a few nights ago. Been so long since I budded anything that I forgot the dose and the original bottle is elsewhere, plus I couldn't search for it because it's confusingly named (Potash+ but not the stuff dutch master makes! and "+" is a search term modifier so you can't search for "+" lol crazy).

It seemed to take it though (it was 150% strength I found out later). I always try to err on the weak side when nuting so I guess that gives me some room to move with things like this. The DM Gold nutes I'm using aren't meant to have PK added but some people do anyway. In the past I've just switched temporarily to DM Advance if I wanted to add PK. If anyone uses Dutch Master Gold I'd appreciate your input on adding PK booster products.

Also, it's just so hard to judge nutrient needs in a cramped scrog under CFLs. I am pretty much running on spidey sense which is why I keep it low ec. Some pics I look at it looks overfed, others not. :/ Normally outdoors in optimal conditions I'd usually be crankin' at 1.4 now, but I keep these guys 1.2 ish. I might try pushing it higher again.

I started working on a new project too, it's top secret for now but it's gonna be impressive and very micro/stealth/cfl/scrog/coco/carbon scrubber ish. Also got my 30x loupe in preparation for harvest here, and my *activated* carbon should turn up any day but really, I haven't smelt a thing from this so I don't think I'll change it.

I don't get to smell anything when I open it because the suction is just so strong. I often graze my forearm against a bud while adjusting lights though and my arm smells out of this world. :abduct: Not skunky at all. More like berries or something. Very nice.

looking excellent scrub ninja. We want to see your top secret project!

I bought myself some dutch masters gold the other day but ive been too lazy to mix it up and replace. I took your advice on the ventilation regarding my pc and ditched the bottom bit but i'm again too lazy to post it up just yet- but its about 10 to the power 10 times better!

you're gonna have some top quality smoke soon!

Thanks DI and good luck with the Gold and the new layout! I'm glad it helped or I would've felt pretty stupid! :D I'll take a peek when I get todays business done. Interestingly enough, your intake duct inspired me for the new project! I'll try to make a sketchup tonight. It's a 20 litre bucket which will look exactly like a bucket, apart from the power lead. I noticed when I put a bucket in the corner, there's a whole 90 degree section at the back of the bucket that can't be seen, so intake and exhaust holes are in that area. That 20l includes the carbon filter and utility area, lol, everything. It's a slow moving project though and might be a few weeks/months. :) Aiming to break 1gpw with it but we'll see!

haha well then it wasnt a hunk of shit just for nothing then!(the intake duct). In my head it was a good idea, before the necessity of a sealed cooltube reversed the intake to the other side of the case with zero airflow over plants :(

Btw i would take some pics but all i have is my shitty phone to do it with but its pretty much like ur diagram. if your hoping to see it tonight ur gonna need some godly intervention. plus its not finished yet with a lot of hacked tape jobbies to really test it out.

1gpw? wow that's a potentialy foolhardy target, but my intuition tells me you've god the head to do it :). Have you smoked all of that fucking beast you grew outside already?

To me too, cheese! :D I *think* harvest will be around day 55 so stay tuned folks.

DI: I actually priced some same ducting as yours but it was too expensive! I wish I could have yours :p I had to go with PVC and I suspect the stuff I've used is too small. Kind of hoping the centrifugal will compensate for the small intake... but regardless, I can switch up the size if I have to. Here it is (not to scale at all) :

The whole bucket is 41cm or 16 inches high, and the diameter is 28cm or 11 inches. You are probably ROFLing after seeing the 23w bulb, but F it, I think 23g can be done. :D It's a goal to aim for really. I have a scientific reason in my head why a smaller scale like this is easier to achieve 1gpw, but it's too long winded, lol. I doubt it would convince anyone anyway so I'm just gonna go for it.

Still smoking the great Aussie Blue, yes! I'm down to the last 5 or 10 grams now but I still thank the ganja gods every day for that little beauty. It's been curing around 7 months now and is a jolly good smoke. :)

Thanks for the comments folks, and sorry about the epic long posts I do sometimes, haha. Peace!

Cheers Cheese! I have no idea really as the dude that gave em to me doesn't keep track of dates, hehe.

:woohoo: 6kg of activated carbon arrived 10 seconds ago.

Here are some bits and pieces I picked up last week at a goodwill type charity store:

^ I got two of those units

^ the scrog screen I buy seperately but I got SIX of these strong, perfectly sized racks. You can see it's the perfect size for the scrog screen I use.

2 x light fittings and 6 x rack/tables... Total cost $6 (au) :D A while ago I picked up an as new dehumidifier (200w) for $10.

I worked out I have some tent sized containers, and using these racks I could set up an ebb and flow that will fit perfectly in the tent! Thinking about adding a small HPS for the next grow too. Exciting!

Well ScrubNinja, yer quite an engineer and the scrog is masterful! Always been intimidated by scrogs but you make it look easy. Gonna have to try it for myself one of these days.

By the way, good selection on that phat phuckin phan er,...fan. As long as you can deal with the sound, you have a scalable piece to any potential upgrade. That fan will cool a 400 watt HID and maybe even a 600. Plus it will last a damn long time!

EDIT: Yer avatar looks just like my cat. Crazy ass cat!

Hey thanks a lot DB! That's exactly what I had in mind with my big ol' fan. I have a 600 hps I've never been able to use for various reasons. I'll take a picture of the fan setup when I pull this lot down. I'll probably be banished from the micro forum when everyone sees it, hahaha, I even had to angle it to fit it in the closet. But so nice to have zero heat issues.

The avatar comes from this macro. I love me some cat macros :D (it has writing on it)

Well I opened my activated carbon now, and god dammit, it doesn't say "activated" on it anywhere!!!! It was quite clearly labelled as activated in the ad. So pissed off it's not activated. It's manufactured in Australia so I'll call them tomorrow and get to the bottom of this.

Right on, yeah it's pretty cramped in there :)

Well, I called the 'facturers and they verified it isn't activated carbon :wallbash: WTF? Why does this stuff always happen to me? Just glad I'm not urgently needing it for some huge stinky grow. I couldn't imagine having my grow safety and ultimately my ass-virginity in the hands of these ebay numpties. Gah... I need a pipe :smoke:

Day 35 - 12/12 5 week mega update :woohoo: Please try to remain calm!

That lower leaf dieback was reoccuring a little. I'm certain I've nailed it down now! I was running the ph a little higher as an experiment and I think it locked out potassium, and probably other things too. I'm no expert when it comes to deficiencies and lockouts but it was definitely something related to potassium. Here's a crappy shot of the underside, you may see some remains of the damage.

I'm pretty sure the buds were developing way too slowly during this time so I probably lost some yield there, but I won't lose too much sleep over it. I'm just glad I worked out what was happening. Ph is important. :| I also noticed part B of my flower nutes had bits crystalized down the bottom. I spent all day shaking them.

The Pure is doing not too bad considering:

But as always, the shivas win out :) I put a lighter in the second shot for scale:

Anyways, big news! I ordered a 188cfm mixed flow fan. It seems to be a clone of the S&P's you see around. I'm getting the 125mm. S&P's and whisperlines etc don't seem to be available here, and this seemed to win the vote on an aussie forum for the stealth grows. Could anyone be so kind as to help me quantify how loud this thing is actually gonna be? They give 2 different decibel ratings for starters. Here's a link to a pdf spec sheet here if it helps. I'm pretty hopeful I can run it on slow speed.

Oh and while I'm here, anyone know who makes my ph and ec meters?

I totally recommend them whoever it is.

Thank you for reading.

I found out my meters are eutech. Got confirmation there is zero weed smell at lights off, and after fondling the buds in lights on, still with the original carbon.

Upped my lights to 208 watts. STILL having leaf issues but it seems pretty minor overall. You gotta check this out:

:yoinks: <- surprised and happy

It's kind of relative to how you muffle it or conceal it but here are some average dB levels for comparison:

Some decibel ratings:
0 db Threshold of hearing
30 db Whisper
40 db Buzz of mosquito
50 db Normal conversation
70 db Vacuum cleaner
100 db Subway or power mower
120 db Rock concert
130 db Jackhammer or machine gun
150 db Nearby jet plane

Thanks Max0r! I'm officially confused about decibels. I looked up an axial I have and it's 46.5dBA... and in that regard, this fan should be as quiet as I need, easily. But FreezerBoy gave me some input: "My Elicent was rated at 45 dB. Quadruple silenced with insulated duct, fan speed control, fan isolation box and muffler, it could still be heard at my neighbor's doorstep across the street."

So I'm just gonna wait till it turns up I guess. :/

I think the most common comparison that helped me decide was listening to bathroom fans. If I couldn't muffle or explain the noise from a bathroom fan in my closet; it wasn't viable. With enough high end 120mm and 80mm fans I can't imagine anything you couldn't keep cold. Heat can be an intimidating issue; but I would rather have a cab 88*F than a fan that's louder than an aquarium pump. GL and let us know how your mixed flow fan works out.
