A vibrant, lime-green aurora lights up Earth's upper atmosphere in this photo captured by an astronaut at the International Space Station. When this photo was taken on Jan. 22, the station was orbiting 261 miles (420 kilometers) above the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North America.

A Stellar Snowflake

A Stellar Snowflake

This view from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope shows a cosmic snowflake, an intricate structure that forms part of the so-called Christmas Tree Cluster. "The newly revealed infant stars appear as pink and red specks toward the center and appear to have formed in regularly spaced intervals along linear structures in a configuration that resembles the spokes of a wheel or the pattern of a snowflake. Hence, astronomers have nicknamed this the 'Snowflake Cluster,'

Look how thin the air layer is. the SR-71 flew up high enough to see curvature of the earth, but only about 1/3-1/4 the way up in that little layer.

they can go higher, but might lose directional control when air density drops to point where flaps cease to function. pilots wear pretty much same gear as astronauts. public may never know how fast/how high Blackbirds can go...

If you like that kind of stuff, this will cost you some time on the computer. Before there was a SR-71, there was the oxcart and the A-12. I used to be stationed at Kadena AB in Japan where they had SR-71 based. We would see them all the time. Damn fine flying plane too, as they would come back and burn off fuel in the traffic pattern with the F-15 guys doing agressive traffic patterns to landings.:
