that's nowhere near "half of Americans". i don't believe it's even half of Republicans. it's mostly poorly educated (and worse informed) folks feeling left behind in the new economies developing. they are pissed because they ARE being left behind by new technology & innovation. we've been warned about this heading our way since the late 80s, it's just that far too many stuck their heads in the sand thinking "LALALALA i can't HEAR you! and if i don't hear you, what you say can't come true..." reality sucks. read "The Politics of the Third Wave", (1995) by Alvin & Heidi Toffler (authors of "Future Shock"), foreword written by Newt Gingrich (before he went insane)
