the smell of a seizure.

Interestingly, folks who suffer from complex partial seizures often have sensations, called auras, preceding the seizure. Olfactory (smell) auras are fairly common, though visual and cognitive disturbances are the most frequent.

Honey child, You are blessed!

If I were you I contact the AMA or some seizure org. and tell them of your gift! You are invaluable! Dogs are OK, but you can speak! Tell them and let them know! - Granny :joint:

It did have an underlying smell of blood to it now that I think about it...

Iron ... schizophrenics can smell like metal and sometimes tasting metal in one's mouth is a symptom of it.

Really cool - thanks for posting!

i just had a lobectomy (not last Nov, but the previous) on my right temporal lobe due to seizure disorder. Serious complex partial seizures in which I maintained consciousness, but lost the ability to comprehend or speak in English (never tried Hebrew :chin: )
Seizure disorder was due to cortical displacia due to birth trauma. Neurons didn't disperse themselves correctly due to being caught in the birth canal for 40+ hrs. My seizure activity was speech /hearing based and I would be able to predict and hear the onset of seizures-not quite a ringing or a buzz--undescribable.
What complicated the issue with the surgery was that I was one of the 3% of the world population that had two speech centers: right and left temporal lobes. There was a chance that I would have lost my speech for the rest of my life. I wasnt too presssed about that though. It would have probably still controlled the seizure activity that prevented me from comprehending interactions. Also, the complex partial seizures peaked as almost panic attack type feelings---type of split brain functioning in which half would maintain control, rationality and objectiveness, and the other kinda hotwired. For a while, the complex partials would generalize into nocturnal tonic-clonics and I would chew the fuck out of my mouth while asleep,. the meds controlleed those, but never really stopped the complex ones. Marijuana helped but the seizures worsened--Hence the surgery.
Anyways my IQ jacked back up to its old level (whatever taht is worth  )and it seems my brain is functioning better now that the "short circuit" section has been emoved. It was a bout 2inches.
It was the worst 3 weeks of my life! but very productive. !st surgery involved estblihing 4 electronic grids on around and behind my right temporal lobe. Iwas hooked up to and EEG to be monitored 24/7. And all my meds were dropped to induce and study my seizure activity in order to pinpoint the seizure focus. However, I had smoked a lot of pot the week previous, so it took almost 3 weeks to have my first seizure! Its anticonvulsant properties are well known. After all the activity was observed, 2nd surgery to remove tissue and grids--then see if I would talk.
It was funny and interesting during recovery with my speech issues--I would disassociate words and concepts. I would comprehend and attempt to communicate thoughts and concepts--but in the middle I would utilize the worong words. instead of saying "I wish I could shave" I would say "I wish I could shit" not knowing why the reaction was laughing, until I was told.
Anyways thats a little bt of my knowledge and experience w/seizures. I have been researching them and studying them for years, and work w/disturbed children, many who have had seizure disorders.

Peace love and hairgrease

yeah i deff believe the brain has incredible abilities that hve sunken into the subconscience(sp) over time, i strongly beleive everyone has the ability to be psychic in a sense or unleash special abilities like changes in hormones through smell when an oncoming seizure is about to happen....... kinda like when you have your back to an open door and you dont hear anything but you can always tell if someone walks in or you are thinking something and suddenly the person you are having a conversation with brings it up for no reason or you go to speak at the same time after a long silence......idk lol  :pointlaug

Actually this happens to me all the time, the only way I can describe it is feeling someones energy. I can usually tell because I quickly become uneasy and can sense the general direction someone is coming from. It actually use to piss my parents off when I was little because when they would try to sneak up on me when they were fucking around I'd be sitting there staring at my doorway waiting for them to step in the door.

It's probably natural to give off odours when in danger sort of like a defence mechanism. some people just have a better sense of smell than others i guess.

I told my boss today and he said "Well damn, that is cool. I believe you because I watched many programs about those dogs and had an employee that claimed the same thing. Soo, you think I should pay you more now??"
Cracked me up. Nice fella, but he still feels a little under the gun (which explains why I am done for the day already).

Tarkus, I totally believe that a human could possess that ability, and you may very well be able to. But when telling the story i would leave out the part about thinking he should go play in the street.... because while you may be able to smell a seazure... i know damn well you can't put thoughts in peoples heads or any of that nonsense and it takes away from the story and makes it seem less credible.

^^^he wasnt saying he had a jedi mind control power , he was just making an idle comment about the situation and the circumstance. I think it is possible too and i dont fault you for not telling him, you cant walk up to people and say" your about to have a seizure, bite this(wooden stick)!" or people might think yer nuts...unless dood actuallly has one then you got super smell power.

I can seriously do this. Have been able to all my life in fact. I've never been around anyone who had seizures so I don't know what that smells like, but I can also pick up on true emotions by their scent as well. Like fear. When I'm pissed at someone, no matter what their body language suggests, if I smell fear its like a fuel to a dragster.

I have found certain flaws in it though. Like if I become accustomed to a building that has chemicals and such I have a more difficult time smelling others in the building.

Outdoors, playing paintball, hide and seek with the kids or anything like that is just completely unfair to everyone. But my kids are getting better at using wind to their advantage. I've taught them well. :woohoo:

Back on topic, I do agree though that if someone has the ability to smell seizures it could be beneficial to study. Perhaps the cure to them is located in our own brains anyway, not sure. Just a thought really.

i'm not sure if anyone mentioned this or not, (my appologies if this post is redundant), but it has also been discovered that dogs are also able to "sniff out" different types of cancers, even in it's earliest stages, just by smelling their breath, (studies were based upon the discovery of their ablility to "sniff out" seizures), that many believe could one day become a common tool in 'early cancer screening'.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/01/0112_060112_dog_cancer.html

the medical community is finally realizing how wonderfully amazing the creatures many of us share our lives with, truely are!! research into dift. types of 'animal therapies' have even found that just petting a dog or cat, (even horses & dolphins), can not only lower one's blood pressure & heart rate, but have found that it also can improve a patient's overall attitude & mood; making things like long hospital stays far less frightening & stressful, especially for children. there are now many dift. types of volunteer programs, animal therapies, & in addition to "service dogs" which are more well known, for the blind or hearing impared; there are now 'seizure alert dogs', & 'theaputic service dogs' for things like anxiety & panic disorders.

i hope this finds you all doing well!
be peaceful, my friends!

may be off topic but its entirely possible even though that wasnt what he was gettin at, i beleive i can project thoughts if i concentrate(not make people do things, jsut thoughts) and i think if u have people very close to you , you are often on "the same wavelength" if u catch my drift

Indeed this "seizure smelling" is amazing!!! There's got to be a phenomenon going on
here......i have heard of dogs detecting imminent seizures (as well as cancer cells),
but WOW in humans!!!!

There is a wonderful book called "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat" about all
sorts of unique and bizarre phenomena that have been recorded in scientific papers
and medical journals. Most of the stories contained in the book are about strange
neurological events that cannot be explained. One is about a man who suffers a
brain injury and then suddenly develops an unbelievably keen sense of smell. The man
could recognize individuals by their unique smells and was even able to navigate his
way through the city ENTIRELY BY SENSE OF SMELL!!! After a few weeks, this ability
disappeared.....

I figure that the brain has many amazing abilities that we have somehow lost over the
course of evolution for some reason......kinda like how everyone could potentially have
a photographic memory or the mathematical abilities of genius savants, if they could
only access these parts of the brain......

Tarkus and WallStreet, you guys should get together and contact a neurologist- maybe you could get MRI scans right next to an epileptic person having a seizure so
they could identify which part of the brain is responsible for this "seizure sense"...

:ying: kind regards from guineapig :ying:

I just watched a special on PBS about dogs and they were explaining how dogs are used for seziure detection as working dogs.

I believe. After all its nature.
