I have had wood burning stoves most of my adult life. Split it with sledge and wedge. Always had Lopi stoves. Today I have a gas fireplace.

Picture of my stove at my cabin……I miss it

My dad supplied us with all the wood to burn all winter. We helped with unloading the truck and stacking it. We also had access to coal as he was in the coal inspection business. Our house was easily close to 100F in the winter. He liked it hot and that wood stove was always cranking. I miss it too 🙂

I'm clearing my storage and have a fireplace insert that is free to anyone who picks it up in Portland, OR.

It is the first prototype that was used once to certify the stove line at my former BIL's (RIP) wood stove company and is plain without all the brass trim.

He gave it to me about 40 years ago and bet me that I would never use it and was right, but he's no longer around to collect the bet, so I'll pass it on at the same price that it cost me.

Yer all lucky you have wood to burn 🔥 - and are allowed to burn it - since I'm in a city smokeless zone - and haven't even dared to put the electric heating on yet this year - due to the astronomical cost of power these days - no ones frozen solid - yet - we move alot - and wear 4 layers of clothing - day and night - plus the luxury of an electric blanket - for really cold nights 🌙

Wood burning stoves require a catalytic converter in Oregon and we have no burn days here where no fireplaces are allowed to burn. In the densely populated valley here, if everyone was burning wood the air would be thick with smoke.

Most folks have converted their fireplaces to burn gas and have glass doors.

Mini splits are the cheapest source of heating and air conditioning that I've ever had.

They keep the house nice an warm when it's -6C outside using less than 500 watts to heat a 1700 sq ft under insulated house.

Another reason not to live in densely populated areas

I am gonna haveta throw a rose to Canuckistan: Last time I went there I was with RedWitch, and we saw so much wild stuff:

Salmon going up a cascade with glass wall to view them.

Large boats laying on their sides with their anchors on long ropes laying on the ground with no water in sight.

Reversing waterfall <-- TINS

Whirlpool <-- Had to go through a guy's house to see it! And the guy was happy to have us there.

Tidal Bore <-- Holy shit!

Ledges at Maces Bay <-- Old story: Daddy and I hadda drop our tub of fish and swim for our lives...

Roses for miles along the road... redolent. We actually had to stop it was so nice.

And lastly, Canadians. It must be something in the water up there. Never met anyone but nice folks.
Thanks for nice words about your visit Unca Walt but don't be fooled by some nice Canadians. We also have our share of unhinged Canadians. Capable of the worst of human behavior. Thankfully they are a small minority.
I have felt the Canadian spirit in action myself. I made a claim to a fellow one time when I had to move to the city. I made mention to the guy I thought country people were more open and good natured. He said to me,
I think good people are good people no matter where you are. After being there for a while I had to agree with him.
Good people are good people no matter the geography, it's in our hearts.
