The Official Hempy Bucket Thread

interesting story about the evolution of your feeding methods dubwise.

i also switched from GH liquid nutes to GH powdered nutes last summer.

much more economical... ended up using 1.5 tsp/gal... had to add some epsom salts also, especially to the plant that received the most light.

added 1 tsp molasses/gal during last month of flowering.

worked great... biggest difference was a lower PH after mixing using the dry nutes. that worked out better for my water supply. i like to run hempys around 5.0-5.5 PH anyway, and now i dont need to use any PH down with the dry nutes...

dry form is way cheaper to ship too.

Hello Hempiers of icmag.

As i mention before in Europe it is not available the complete
General Hydroponics line so i cannot follow the K.I.S.S feeding schedule.

Calculations for nutrient consumption Hempy vs dwc
counting for 3 months grow ( veg+flowering )

dwc bucket 20 liters vs Hempy 10 Liter .
with Lucas formula 8/16

Hempy watering every 3 days with 3 liters of solution
needs 90 liters

190 ml Micro
380 ml Bloom

Dwc with one water change every 15 days
needs 120 liters

253 ml Micro
506 ml Bloom

It seems that Hemmpy's win but Of course while most of us
running dwc we toping off nutes and using a lot
less nutes

Anyway i was talking about it cause i was counting the nutes that i must buy
to feed the 25 Hempys that growing......Well

25*190 = 4750 ml Micro
25*380 = 9500 ml Bloom

Thank God i was feeding light !!!!!

Today after my watering EC 1,5 & ph 5,5 i count runoff with EC 2,0 & ph 5,7.
Tommorow i will drain somewater for mesuring and if the EC is at 2,0 i will
make a flush with R/O before the next watering.

Question.
How big hempy buckets do you use per one plant, I just finished a project with 2.6gal (american) buckets and I must say it wasn't probably the best result.
These I used from veg to finish.
Curious what you guys use because whole bucket was not full of roots only the bottom where the water is was full of roots..

I bet you only used 100% perlite, absent the vermiculite that assists with the wicking action.

When I experimented with only perlite hempys I found that the root zone was smaller compared to hempys made with a media blend of perlite and verm. And I observed the roots growing like a "mat" at the bottom of the bucket. Where only the bottom of the bucket had roots and a small area above the waterline of the rez.

In contrast to my 75% perlite 25% vermiculite hempys which had roots propagated entirely throughout the entire bucket media.

Nope I did use per/verm according to amounts in this thread, but yeah a mat of roots on the bottom is what I had. I'm buying more verm for next grow, I'm confident the pots aren't too small..

Hrm that is something I have not seen when using verm. Between your waterings did the pots get quite dried out ?

yes and no, I had a very baaaad watering can and my pots were hard to water in my crowded growspace so I poured lots and sometimes less. In flower I watered less frequently and never experienced much run-off water. It was my first time Hempying so next run I will be wiser with watering arrangements. You will see in my upcoming verticalgrow diary :)

I'm getting ready for my first grow in 12yrs going do Hempy went to our local Home Depot for vermiculite they don't carry it at mine anymore, I asked the girl why she said everybody asks for it and doesn't why.
I think they want you to buy Miracle Grow instead of mixing your own.

Suspect-I've used all sorts of sizes for buckets and there does exist a point of diminished return...While using a 15gal container and vegging for 6 months, the plant was a power house and produced a lot of product...but the amount of time, nutrients and energy really wasn't worth it. I like to stay in between 3gal & 5 gal containers with a month to two month veg time.
HDJ-have you been to an agricultural store? They've got vermiculite. Good luck on the grow.

I did 3 gallon pots last grow, but stepped down to 2 gallon this round, plants are about 3' tall. I use coco cut with maybe 20-30% perlite and a straight perlite reservoir. I water every day, once a day, no matter if there is still water in the reservoir or not.
I started using a root excelerator and the root mass is looking really good this round. I even have roots shooting out the drain holes, unlike last round without the excelerator. Coupled with Whiteshark and feedings every day, they are very happy.

I'd like some input from you kind people please....
the bloom room is 8'x8'x20' and currently holds a 1kw hps vert....I've got a chance to put in an additional 1kw....first instict is to throw up some shelves and hang the 2nd hps above the 1st and run two "rows" of hempy buckets....does anyone currently run a room like this? Any tips or ideas that would make feeding/tending to the 2nd row of plants easier?

Must I use a bucket without any holes then drill my own? I need to use square buckets/pots/pails (still looking for an online vendor) for use in my grow tent for optimal space. Could I use square pots that have drainage holes on the bottom already?

Sure you can, you just wont really be doing hempy buckets. the whole point is to create a mini resevoir in the bottom of the bucket. If you use a bucket that has holes all in the bottom, the nutrients will just flow through. I used buckets a while back that holes in the bottom and I taped them and it worked. However, the buckets that worked better were ones that were solid and I had to make the hole in. If you can get to a bakery, they will have square-ish buckets for almost nothing. These work well.

Joe I have homie's who use their kitty litter white buckets and just drill your hole ese`, also you can go buy square buckets at any dollar store for a buck each, their waste baskets and I have one on the side of me right now it's a 12 quart which would be big enough but I used 5 gallon buckets, depends on how many you need and room you have.

Once after my casa is done being renovated and my grow rooms up again I am going to venture in to an organic grow but still hempy has been good to me for 3 grows and I averaged 70 to 80 grams a plant no whopping yields but enough for me..

good luck amigo

joe: if you choose to use square conventional bottom-draining containers, then just set them inside of a seedling tray or something with sides at least 2 inches high... individual drip trays made from, say, a pie pan or something work good too.

you can top water them and let the runoff build up enough in the tray to create the reso effect...

also, if the side walls of the runoff catchment tray are taller than two inches, then you can add even more reso depth for an extra day or two if needed...

Also on the flip side of creating a reso you don't want to have water sitting creating root rott either..

that's for sure roach... root rot sucks.

i only use the extra reso area discussed above if needed... b/c i'm gonna be away for longer than normal and don't want to risk them drying out. i also add h2o2 to give the roots an extra molecule of oxygen when i do it this way...

BTW, i do NOT add the h2o2 if the plants are growing in an organic medium though.

i prefer feeding a short time after the reso becomes empty... regardless of the hempy container size. so that could mean feeding every few days or even multiple times each day, depending on the environmental variables in play and the size of the plants...

Simple question for you hempy growers - is it possible to hit 1gpw with this set up?I ask because I am considering changing to a rockwool slab setup fom hempys as o am aiming for 1lb under a 600w
