The Official Hempy Bucket Thread

There is really no difference...the hempy bucket has roots sitting in stagnant water...my roots sit in stagnant water. At least my stagnant water changes with each watering. The hempy pot has a "dead zone" that doesn't change much if at all.

The difference is that there is less evaporation with the water in the bucket.

You don't want to feed or water your plants in hempy till they have used all the water in the bucket so there shouldn't be any dead zones as you put it and when you do feed you want to make sure that you get run-off to keep it fresh.

whats up fellow hempy growers. i was wondering if anyone has a good design 2 catch water runoff from the buckets. i am running ten 3 gallon buckets and it is a bitch switching out the runoff trays and sometimes they overflow and yea big mess. not to mention all the damn dust from the perlite and verm. any designs would be greatly appreciated. im sure i would find something in this thread but i am too lazy to read through the countless pages.

Instead of just punching holes in my tub I have a bigger hole with a net over the inside to prevent the medium from coming out. The whole box is placed on a stand with a collecting dish under it. You can kind of make it out in this pic

sweet setup japan. i figured out a solution to my problem. i feel like an idiot for not thinking of this sooner. im just going to get another 3 gal bucket and put the bucket with my plant inside and the empty bucket and just raise it up about 4-5in from the bottom of the empty one. that was so simple. im sure someone would have told me the exact same thing.haha. peace guys. happy growing

lol, that works too. Here's a better pic of my setup. I like this way because I can collect the run-off easily and just take this little dish and dump it.

Originally I thought I was going to want to test the run-off from time to time but there has never been a need of that

If you look at the Indian hydroponics blog, you see that they attached little beverage bottles to the hempy containers. They do not even hassle over pH and they re-use the water.

Danktreez14, I don't quite understand. How shallow are your runoff trays? The least expensive I can think of are the flimsy aluminum pie pans at the supermarket, walmart, etc. Step up for more sturdiness and you can use the plastic "seedling propogation trays". Those are usually $1 to $1.50 a piece.

they are really shallow about an inch and a half. i'm liking the method you pictured above what are those nipple things sticking out of the bucket called? what section of hd do i find them?

I got my collecting bucket for a buck as well. I wouldn't recommend using small cola bottles like the ones in India because obviously those will overflow and you want to aim for about 30% run-off every time you feed.

It's algae and it starves your roots of oxygen if left untreated, use a 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 5 parts water solution and spray the surface down a few times a week, it'll be gone in no time.

This was happening to me and I solved it by casing the perlite with about 1" of hydroton. I can't say it was anything more than an inconvenience when trying to recycle the perlite.

Nothing to worry about. The top layer will often develop some discoloration from the nutes and sometimes even spots of algae but it never seems to work it's way under. If you brush it with your hands you'll find it's still clear right under.

Don't worry bro every one of my buckets has it. its from the light and water on the surface of the perlite. it only stays on top and when your plants get bigger and shade the surface of your bucket it goes away. it has no ill affects on the plants though.:ying:

Mine is a large hose connecting joint. They sell them in some hardware stores here and they come in different sizes and shapes, like t-joints and such.
