The Next Evolution of Man

So, I haven't really posted in a while, but just been thinking about some stuff recently and wanted to get it on paper (or on the internet).

There's one thing that no one can really argue and that is the fact that technology has been changing at an exponential rate. Think back to early man, where maybe every couple hundred years there would be a big break through in technology, for instance the bronze age, or the early attempts at plumbing and irrigation. For the most part technology remained the same with changes coming very gradually.

Now think about the past one hundred years.... again technology is changing at an exponential rate. 100 years ago the car was just becoming popular... now we have every variety of cars, airplanes and spaceships. Even think about the past 20 years and how the internet has developed and evolved. What will the internet be like in another twenty years?? One can only imagine. The only constant in the world is change...

Anyway, now think about the purpose of the human race...at the most basic level, our goal is to survive and to reproduce. Thats it - everything else has been created to ease this process, or in some cases to protect this process.

So, how can we guarantee our survival? Well, human tissue may only stay healthy for so long, but metals tend to have a much longer life span. We have already integrated machines into human beings in the form of pacemakers or devices that allow the blind to have a sense of vision. What happens when we take this to the next level? Lets say you have a bad heart...well how about a mechanical heart that will never fail... and if it does start to fail, it can simply be repaired.

The process starts small with devices such as pacemakers, but i'd imagine down the road we could integrate larger devices to replace or compliment faulty organs. That would be the beginning of our evolution to the next level of man. A species that could never die (except for self destruction, or the destruction of earth) and would hardly rely on natural resources. No need to eat if your getting your energy from solar power or something of the sort...

It's an interesting idea and I know it sounds crazy, but imagine what state our technology will be at 100 years from now. The level the internet is at today was unimaginable twenty years ago, but its here today and we are only moving forward. Anyway, just something to think about.

Personally I'm evolving in the other direction. Everytime I light up, I transform into a giant veggie.

humans are meant to be fleshy and organic, not metallic and robotic, even though if i lost a limb i want the metal leg with the shock absorber on it:D

genetic engineering, not metalic, is the way that everything you discussed is already possible. If your heart fails now, they can grow you a new one from your own dna, it just costs more than you can afford.

We are Borg. You will be assimilated!

Actually, our future development into superman depends on our ability to change our genes and trick our cells. Right now, cells only regenerate so many times, eventually causing old age and decay. The brain may not be the first organ to go, but when it does, the fat lady is singing.

they cant grow you a new heart from your dna. not as of yet.

i think the biggest thing is going to be genetic engineering. we have to be very careful though because changing genes can have negative effects and usually does ie. cancer. i think we will need a super computer that can acuretally replicate the human body down to sub cellular levels then modifications to the genome can be made and the effects can be mapped potentially to the end of life. .... wow where did that idea come from. i swear to god if we had stoner scientists we would already be colonizing space, the shuttle would be held together with duct tape and the rations would consist of brownies and cookies but we would get there lol.

by 2023, at the rate that technology is increasing, the Average $1,000 computer will have greater computing power and a greater wealth of knowledge than the whole human race...scary

im sure they will have problems, but i mean that is the ground work for A.I. that has the ability to learn and change from its environment

u know some guy will genetically engineer a penis for himself thats 100 lbs and 6 feet long just for the hell of it. some weird chick will probably make ttites like beach balls and has to cary them around in a wheelbarrow. elephantitis will be all the rage....

They could grow a whole new you if you could afford it. The only problem would be moving in lol. They can grow anything they like now, its just a lot cheaper to engineer animals like pigs to have more human generic organs and then bombard you with anti rejection drugs when they put animal organs into you instead. That way they grow new organs in farm yards rather than expensive labs requiring lots of staff for each organ. They have machines that can assemble any combination of ATGC's they want. Then provinding the combination is viable, it grows when stimulated in the right way.

Ok, so perhaps genetic engineering is the next step. I still personally think robotics are the way of the future due to the fact that they can go above and beyond human ability - for example you could have thermal, x-ray and regular vision with robotic eyes, but perfect human eyes will only give you regular vision.

Maybe genetic engineering will be the next wave and then move into robotics.

It's still interesting to think that we could create people that would never die... what would that mean for the future? Would we even do it if we had the capability?

We should'nt do it. I mean the assholes in the world live long enough why prolong the lives of people who should'nt be alive in the first place? Its not like this technology would ever benefit the ones who deserve it. IE, decent people!

Bene Tleilax anyone?? If you are not a Dune fan, the you won't know. They engineer human parts in the future. Can make replacement limbs or organs(eyes, leg, heart, lung, spine, nose...), exact replica clones from a few cells of a dead body, and face dancers (able to morph into anyone).
And also, precursor to Dune, the Butlerian Jihad series, is human vs machine. The human race is battling the computer evermind that seeks to destroy mankind and enslave the universe. Damn good too.
